:o - thats the first time I've heard that idea!
I guess I don't see why not after you get shell access in 5.0
that is, assuming you know how to put a print server on linux...

Out of curiosity I configured file and print sharing on my Untangle box.
All went well as far as getting things installed and configured correctly . Once it was setup, fellow boxes on the network could see the Untangle box as a pc with shares but couldn’t access anything it had to share.
The next thing I found was kind of interesting to me, I decided to reboot the Untangle box and check to see if I could access any of the shared services on it before it had fully booted. To my surprise I could. What I mean by before “fully booting” is before the Untangle “desktop” loads completely and becomes accessible. As soon as the desktop was available I lost my connections to any shared services.
The behavior happens regardless of what is loaded or running in the rack.. It can be full and configured, or it can be empty, it doesn’t matter. (btw for anyone reading and wondering I believe the ports in question for all this if I recall right are 137,138,139 and 445)
If one of the insiders could shed some light on what may be causing this behavior and how to possibly work around it that would be nice. I’m really curious about the whole idea now. If it doesn’t work the first time that makes it all the more intriguing for me lol.
Also wanted to say great product by the way… I’ve been watching for a while on and off and have just gotten around to playing with it hands on. Definitely a good piece of software you have put together and are continuing to improve.:)
Thanks-

Cool! - sounds like you are close...
The reason it changes after X boots up is because X boots up right after the untangle VM boots (which takes control of all traffic)
I would try connecting to the ports you think are open
aka:
from the local box try 'telnet 127.0.0.1 445'
from a remote box try 'telnet IP 445' and see if it connects
I'm wondering if you can't connect after the untangle-vm boots because its catching the traffic...

Hey dmorris, Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah I assumed it was one of the Untangle services taking over after boot up - regardless of anything configured in the rack being what surprised me but I guess thats the very nature of it. Looking at the big picture it makes sense it would be this way. (I understand the very theme of this thread is kinda going against the flow as to what Untangle even is)
I haven’t gone as far as to start picking off services yet to see what interrupts the connection, but I did already try telnet’ing the local and scanning from a remote box - both were not able to access the ports.
This is all on the internal interface btw just so we’re clear on that. At the moment I don’t have access to my box so I cant play with services. *bummer* lol
Well thanks again,

Are there any news on this topic?
Like the original forum member, I'm also interested in having a Print Server Application on Untangle; is anything like that on the roadmap?
Thank you very much for this wonderful piece of software!
faro,
I would suggest that you file an enhancement request at http://bugzilla.untangle.com if nobody has already. If it is already on file, vote for it!
