View Full Version : Web usage time restrictions

I have a client that is interested in some type of web filter that will limit a user's web usage time per day to specific amount of time. They don't want this to be a scheduled period of time, but rather a set amount for the full day.

For instance, say that they want users to have 30 minutes of web usage a day. They don't want to schedule this for a specific time like 12:00 to 12:30, they want the user to be able to do 5 minutes here, 10 minutes later in the day, etc., for a total of 30 minutes throughout the day.

Is this possible in the professional package with LDAP integration? If not, is this something that could be looked into if I submit an enhancement request.

I don't see that one coming, though you can submit a enhancement request if you like. Typical time-oriented needs are for schedule basis rather than quota basis. Submit it...maybe we'll be surprised.

I have it submitted. Maybe nothing will come of it, but it would be a really nice feature.

You believe it has value, and have done what it takes to bring it up for discussion. Now we wait and see. Thanks for following through with that!

I think it's a good idea as this is. Download quotas. WinRoute Firewall has this where you set up limits on how much a user can download. 500mb per day, week or month etc. Then user is shut off network or speed limited once quota is reached. So you could say 5gb per day then rate limit to 5kB/sec etc. These features would be awesome. They would be awesome specially for isp enforced limits or invisible limits.

I know for me I'd set this for say 100gb per month and then speed limit to something or shut off a user til end of period.

How do you make feature requests to the devs of Untangle anyhow?

Gee, that's what Comcast did to me!

Yes, me too long ago. They said I downloaded around 700gb in one month and asked me to stop or buy a T3 line for like $20k. Literally he said that about the T3 line.

So I got their business class which was better performance, but I didn't hardly use it like the previous month, lol. So I went back to the standard 8mb connection for home users. Been ok since.

I'll submit my req though. Be kinda cool.

Not anymore. If I ever do anything it's deleted shortly after. I don't keep anything anymore and really don't download like I used to.

The only real downloading I might do would be from Yahoo Music unlimited or the PS3 and Xbox 360 I have. I have had a yearly subscription to yahoo for a few years, but don't use it anymore so i'm cancelling it now. That leasves just my PS3 and Xbox 360 or wh8en I decide to download something large which isn't often anymore.

I do hope th8ese ideas will be considered.

...and download limits. Especially the time limits. Most of my clients are asking for a way to control web browsing during blocks of time during the day. In fact, they request this service more than they do VPN and VoIP!

I'll keep my fingers crossed.
