Obviously a lot of you saw the announcement about us going open source in 5.0

We've been REALLY busy with making 5.0 open source and are really excited about finally launching it.

You can read a bit about our reasoning at:
http://blog.untangle.com/?p=52#more-52

I think this will be much better for everyone, as users will now have the ability to tinker and customize.

Wow, you guys tied the AD integration and config backup to the Professional package? That's a kick in the pants. I should at least be able to backup my config, regardless of what capacity I'm utilizing... SO it would seem.

Also, can you elaborate on the Adv Policy Management piece in the Pro Package?

I had a feeling this thing was too good to be true. Sorry, just ranting! :)

come on now - look at how much we're giving away for free now! :D

btw, you can still backup your server all you like, you just can't back it up to our datacenter.

Policy Management - set user, group, and time based policies for web and remote access. Examples include providing more liberal web access to specific employee groups, such as research associates, or to everyone during lunch and breaks.

Active Directory Integration - enables policy management and reporting by Active Directory user name. This simplifies monitoring and policy set-up.

I just wish these 2 options would still be free for 1-10 users... I remember just last week these were going to be free for 1-10 users 'forever'. Guess that changed.

Sorry, not trying to bust anyone's chops, but this just seems to be the typical moves that most upstarts pull when they realize they need to make more money. I know, I know...everyone needs to make money. :)

If you downloaded and installed it last week it is free for you. Those free users using ad integration and policy management will be grandfathered via the upgrade.

How is this going to work. I have been using untangle for about a month now and recently reinstalled the new 5.0 beta. How are you going to determine who will get grandfathered in?

If you installed 4.2 prior to Tuesday - you'll get grandfathered automagically on the upgrade from 4.2 to mustang when that happens.

If you overwrote your 4.2 with 5.0 beta - we can work something out because we love beta users :)

I for one am happy for the change. You guys really have a great product here. I am just a home user trying it out. I am mainly aiming for the spyware blocker, web filter and virus scanner abilties. Untangle incorporates them into a nice package. We have 7 computers or so at home, sometimes a lan party with up to 14 or so. :) :)

PS I am beta testing 5.0
