I have 2 Untangle servers on my network that are filtering 2 internet connections used by adults. I have a ClarkConnect server filtering a third connection that is used by children in a K-8 school.

The ClarkConnect platform uses "Dan's Guardian" for web-filtering and I really like the fact that I can block via keyword as well as by URL.

I deployed a 3rd Untangle server behind the ClarkConnect server and have been comparing reports and doing some testing. I would really like to replace this last filter with Untangle but I can not find a way to block via Keyword or Wildcard in Untangle.

Is this a feature that can be added?

Is there a possibility of a different distro that could be used for gradeschools, churches, public libraries, etc ?

You are correct that we do not have a capability to filter based on keywords. From what I understand, that method generates too many false positives. It would also cause potential slowness due to the need to read all content before deciding what to do with it. I do not think we would create a build specifically for certain target audiences.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I am not too worried about speed on this connection - or even false positives. I am more concerned that the kids don't see anything inappropriate.

I am very happy with Untangle on my other two networks - it does an excellent job of filtering SPAM and gives me great reports that I have used to sucessfully identify a couple of renegade machines on my network.

I will continue to use this one as a bridge and as a "backup" in case something gets past the other one.

Yeah, I see where the feature could be used quite a lot. We can put in for an enhancement request. That way at least it'll be out there and documented.
Other then that could you block all web traffic then have a specific whitelist for the kids, it might take a while to compile, and be incomplete at first, but it would ensure a great degree of safety.
Here is the enhancement request, you can add to it if you have any other ideas for it:)

Thanks again!

The Untangle filter itself is blocking obvious pornography but last week we were suspicious of kids playing some inappropriate online arcade games.

Java/Shock based games are hard to filter out, but if the Title Page contains a bad word, it should be used to help get it blocked.

For now I have the ClarkConnect server in front of the Untangle server (bridged) using keyword blocking and a Dan's Guardian webfilter.

Internet --> (ClarkConnect) ---> (Untangle Bridge) ---> School Network

By the way - Dan's Guardian is Open Source
