My internet access bandwidth can achieve 1MBytes/s download speed before using Untangle. But it drops to 250KBytes/s after activiate the Router function. (without enable the other open source apps). I changed MTU and max. speed achieve can only up to 500KBytes/s. Is it the spec. of this server?
I'm using a dedicated PC to install this server.

Welcome to the forums. That is not normal behavior, so please let us know more about your hardware ..... CPU type/speed ... installed RAM ... disk type/size. How are you determining the speed ... websites (HTTP) ... newsgroups (NNTP) ... bit torrent (shame on you [just kidding]). Also, changing MTU could be good in one case but bad in another, so you want to make sure that its the right thing to do before changing it. Get back to us with mounds of data and we'll see if we can figure out what's going on.

I don't mean to hijack this thread. But, I'm having the same problem except my is lot worse. My internet bandwidth can achieve 3MB/s download before untangle. Now, I'm down to 1.5KB/s. My test server spec is:

Dell GX270 --- Pentium 4, 1Gig memory, 2 NICs, and 80GB hard drive.

I'm using Pentinum D 3GHz processor, 1GB DRAM, 2 NICs and 200GB hard drive. I used a FTP download from a speedtest site to compare the speed before and after the installation.

I also have a 50% drop in throughput. The untangle machine is a P4 with 2gs of memory.

Hello all! I'm new to Untangle, but am impressed with what I see so far. I'm seeing a similar situation with outbound FTP throughput through Untangle. I have it setup as a transparent bridge between the network and the firewall, filtering all traffic.

My setup is as follows:

Hardware
* P4 1.8 GHz
* 512 MB RAM (I know, below spec, but it's all I have)
* 200 GB Hard Drive
* Dual port Intel 10/100 network cards

Enabled Services
* Phish Blocker
* Spyware Blocker
* Web Filter
* Virus Blocker
* Protocol Control
* Remote Access Portal
* Open VPN
* Configuration Backup

Pre-Untangle, the person doing the FTP'ing would get about 150/kb/sec or higher across our dual-T1 connection. Today, the connection would start off at about 60/kb/sec and slowly drop down to around 10/kb/sec. I had the user try FTP'ing to various separate sites, and the same issue would occur.

I put the user on a static IP and created a second policy removing all filtering for his IP; however, we saw the same problem with throughput. I reconnected our internal network directly to the firewall, and the FTP throughput was back up at 150/kb/sec.

I know that I should probably have more RAM in the system on which Untangle is running, but to see such a drastic reduction in throughput only with outbound FTP is bizarre. :confused:

That is interesting........about the ftp traffic only dropping. All the other throughput is fine though?
I would test it out with this as well.....just curious if the results will be the same.
Go to support, manual protocol overide. Then disable ftp filtering.
Then do your test again if you could.
Thanks and welcome to the forums@Untangle!

For everyone who is using FTP to measure throughput, please do some forum searches for the words "PASV" and "passive". Those are keywords to look for FTP issues here, because the forum doesn't let you do a search for 3-letter strings (like FTP, grrr!). There are issues with download resume, virus blocker, and passive mode. If you find the threads, you may be able to do some tweaking that will help you feel more comfortable with the results.
