"They reflect anger of something which you feel was "taken" from you when in reality you have been using Untangle for years probably without paying a dime and furthermore exploiting a bug in license management to use some of the paid features for longer than the trial period without paying. "

Taken? If you read this and other posts, I believed that the near real time bandwidth portion was left enable to entice a purchase of the Bandwidth Monitor. Had you read my previous threads about this made months ago you should have been able to understand that. Others agreed with my standing, no one agreed with Untangles (About not having some sort of near realtime network bandwidth usage graph)

BTW I have 2 clients using this that pay for it, I do not as I am using it for 3 people. I do not use the same account in the forums as I do for their business as I setup administrator@theirbusiness.com accounts for them to keep them separate.

The Bandwidth Monitor, after trial expiration, did NOT seem to use the QoS portion to my knowledge after the trial was over with as it did appeared to be disabled (Or broken, as reports never worked for it either for me). The real time network usage portion did seem to work after the trial expiration (As mentioned in my previous threads), which simply stated who or what, in real time, was using the bandwidth. I thought, as stated in this and many posts, that this feature should be free, as others agreed, as ALL OTHER COMPETITORS give this simple feature for free.

For myself, I do use Untangle in Bridge mode with a DDWRT unit in front that does that bandwidth monitor for me and firewalling/NAT, and a moderately difficult script to a USB stick on the unit for granular IP Network use in near real time (5 seconds). Problem solved for me.

And lastly, I am at a UC very close to you, one of the largest, oldest and most respected. They, per my suggestions, are evaluating your product to try and outsell the iPrism they have here. We are aware of the Premium package and the Educational Discount which are stellar but they are locked into a iPrism contract to 2012. I am the project lead for their infrastructure and we are also trying to sell this to several other divisions here at this school and possibly Ohio State. Lucky for you your product outshines your completely unprofessional response.

If I was your manager, I would immediately take you off the forums and put you back in the server room where your response and you belong. Maybe being the Untangle spokesperson isn't your gig as is apparently obvious here in your postings. You seem pissed, you have attacked me several times now on here for legitimate questions and comments, and have made accusations that just aren't true.

We all have bad days, several of my very own posts show this, but wow, you need a vacation and definitely need to stay the hell out of the forums for a few weeks.

Sry to bugger in here but Dirk gave a correct answer in replay nr 2.

Jnettop and IFtop are both loaded in to Untangle.
Right they have no WebGui but I find them better and more responsive than my WebGui version in PFsense..

I normally have 2-3 SSH windows to my biggest clients where i monitor there traffic flow with Jnettop.

And before Untangle created the Bandwidth Module both paid and free users only had Jnettop/Iftop.

Venom You do know who Dirk is right?
If not he is the CTO and Co funder of Untangle.
And if you really wan't a Official response i would recommended you to contact Untangle directly and not here on the Forum.
Untangle Staff is here on there "spare" time and not on the clock.

And if you start reading all of Dirks post here on the forum you should quite quickly get the picture of his helping nature...

Understood. Going over all my posts I can see where someone could easily misinterpret what I am trying to get at, and perhaps the same with Dirk.

But I still stand by some of what I say, that a network monitor should be free in Untangle using some sort of open source app. Also, Untangle wouldnt even be here if it wasn't for the FREE work of others in the Open Source community. Having someone say "Try another product" and "due to the hoards of free users" seems like the pot calling the kettle black.

    @ Webfool

"Jnettop and IFtop are both loaded in to Untangle. "

Do you mean that both of these are already installed in Untangle and I merely need to find a way to reach and access them?

    Webfool

Thanks for the info. May I ask one thing further, is there a way to have either of the above, or both, start at the Untangle system boot? Or is it best to do this manually every time via SSH console?

    Thanks again!

    Venom,

All depends on how you have it setup.
If you have a monitor connected to you UT server you could do some startup script but i would not advice on it.

I run SSH to my normal desktop and run jnettop from there.
That makes it easier to copy ip/dns-name from ssh client to whois etc.

Too many forget this when it comes to making money.

EDIT: I am not saying Untangle is, they have released source code, but others take for free and then do not return. GPL and other license violations are rampant.

    Agreed.
As others have mentioned there are multiple open source & free options already pre-installed for you on your untangle server.
    jnettop, iftop, tcpdump, wireshark, etc.
There are all stellar tools (and better than the bandwidth control UI in many peoples' eyes)

Heck if you take some time to do some digging and are willing to experiment I've provided a way to get the wireshark that runs on Untangle to render to an X server that can live on your windows desktop.

Open Source means the tools are there, but they are hard to use. If you want the convenience of the GUI, you need to compensate Utnangle for the time they spent making that GUI.

I'm trying to figure out what the issue is. Untangle isn't giving enough away?
