Default Resolving Cert Errors on Captive Portal

    Hello,

I have got a customer now successfully using the Captive Portal using ssl so their usernames and passwords are not sent in clear text across the Wifi / Network.

It has taken weeks to resolve the issue due to the lack of documentation around the start.php file needing to be edited, I guess because this is more of a hack then a fix.

Then the cert we had wasn't supported by all devices etc so we are replacing it with a verisign cert now.

My question is why is this so difficult and why isn't it an option just within the untangle gui ?

I happened to be on another of our customers sites today, they are using a competitors product which I wont mention but I connected to the wifi, tried to browse the web it redirected me to http(s)://whatever.product, got a loverly padlock with green background filling me with confidence. I logged in, it sent me back off to google or whatever my homepage is and everything was error free.

I need to understand why it is considered to be such an issue for untangle to implement.

I really do love the product and want to push it into more of our customers but it is just this problem which is bugging me.

    Hope you can help.

I'm not sure what you are referring to.

The user supplied code change to start.php has been incorporated into the codbase as of 9.2.1 I think, so http redirect to https shouldn't be an issue. Https redirect without an error is not possible without creating a proxy.

While I'm pretty sure, I can't guarantee that I know what I'm doing. There might be a better way to do this, and this way might actually suck. Make sure you understand the implications of what you're doing before trying to follow these directions.

It often helps troubleshooting if you have a good network map. Look here if you want my advice on how to draw one.
