Question Untangle server in need of weekly reboot?

First I have to say that I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, and I am sorry if it is not.

Second, My untangle box has been running for over a year now without issue, however recently I have found that in order to reach it or the quaranteen pages i am now requiring a reboot. The machine itself is not a powerhouse; however, it is a decent box, it is a P4 with 2gb of memory and a 160gb hard drive in it... has anyone seen anything like this before? I havent checked disk space, but i dont think it would be an issue... but you never know...

    Thanks,

    B

I'd hardly call a P4 a "decent box" any more, regardless of what kind of RAM or disk it has. Go dual core or go home, otherwise one runaway thread will always be able to peg your system. P4's weren't even that good in their heyday, as the equivalent AMD processors of the period were faster, more stable, and ran cooler.

That said, I've been considering scheduling a weekly reboot as well.

Rebooting your system, if an issue is recurring weekly is not resolving the issue, it is merely prolonging the effects. I realize in a production environment it is difficult to work on the device, however rebooting is not "fixing it".

How many users do you have behind UT? What symptoms are you having causing you to decide to reboot? Lets see if we can find the root of the issue, and get a permanent fix, rather than creating a weekly cron job, or devoting man hours to watching it reboot.

P4 is plenty of horsepower. I suspect you have an issue.

First I would like to thank you for a more productive post than jcoehoorn who seemed to only post to see himself post, and to answer your question there are only 5 users behind this box and what I find to be happening to them is that almost like clockwork users are unable to get to the email quarantine web page to check for false positives. At the same time I am unable to connect to the server via browser and I need to go to the server and reboot the device from the console... This just started happening a few weeks ago after almost a year of working flawlessly... I am thinking of exporting all of the settings and reinstall from scratch when I can find the time to do this; however, it would be better to find the solution to the issue that is happening then to just wipe and reload...

Sounds like apache process is stopping for some reason. Seen this a couple times but its always been a one off that might take months to recur.

Could be disk space. From the console do a:
    Code:
    df -h
This will tell you what partitions are mounted and what kind of disk usage you have.
The beatings shall continue until morale improves!

was able to see that i had plenty of space available, I went into the console GUI as well and confirmed I had over 13GB of space available and then went to my own email spam quarantine and saw that it was over 1gb in size, when I looked I had 4 pages of emails there and a good portion of those were over 50mb in size from a crap ton of .tw web sites...

even after clearing that i cannot get to the https console from the normal machine like I used to or the quarantine digest.

which brings me to 2 things...

    1. any other thoughts...
    2. is there a way to configure the spam filter to limit size just like I can in Exchange 2010?

    TIA

    Ben

you have over 1Gb in your quarantine?

The size limit on messages even scanned for spam is tiny. How are you getting those huge emails in the quarantine?

after doing a little digging i found that it was letting things in up to 225,000 kb in size which if i remember correctly is 225 mb.. i lowered this to only 15 mb since there are some attachments that need to get through.. or am i reading that setting wrong

under spam/advanced smtp settings/message size limit was 225000

    Thanks,

    B
