Smile Cost of Ipsec

As a home user that wants ipsec vpn on his iphone ipad android and laptop i find that 270$ is too much for someone that just wants 1 or 2 tunnels and is not a corporation i got a x86 pc with 2 gigabit nics i am going to try untangle on and maybe get the cache feature as its reasable priced at 54$

i think u guy should make a home ipsec version for 100$ or less a yr
and limit the tunnels to say 10

also what do u guys think can a atom d510 handle untangle well with the free antivirus and webcache and maybe ipsec later on

sorry to complain but i really like the idea of this its just the cost for a geek home user / student

Look at it from Untangle's point of view now. How are they to tell you are indeed a home user, not a company? Pretty hard for tnem to tell, don't you think?

While I agree that we "advanced home users" (term used for lack of better vocabulary) get frustrated with the cost of the advanced functionality we wish for, we also have to remember that if Untangle does not make money, none of the great free stuff we enjoy around here will be around for very long...

My 2 cents.

Also the IPSEC is only site to site. So your need to use openvpn.

As mentioned, OpenVPN is part of the free lite package which will serve home users' needs.

I'm run Untangle with everything except spam blocking on a d510 without issue.

Spam blocker works fine, as long as it's SMTP only scanning. POP3 and IMAP scanning performance can be a bit painful.

We have a server in service on a 200 user network with spam filtration and the client loves it. It's powered by the d510. However, I don't "support" the use of that device in that way. For many of the same reasons that jcoffin has about recommending you not use the spam module.

Atom processors are wonderful tools, but they are computationally weak, and in the wrong places, it can make Untangle an unbearably annoying platform.

Patience, the current release of iOS finally has a VPN API, Droid is working on the same stuff. So in the next year or two we'll finally start seeing non-root VPN clients out there.

80 is more than enough, we sell a device with a 32gb SSD in it and it's doing fine.

As long as you aren't quarantining e-mail you never need more than about 10gb of space.

Now that said, I don't like having less than 80gb in the server. It gives you room to fix things when they break.

Maybe not the answer you are looking for but have you looked at http://www.pfsense.org

I know someone who is using UT as their main firewall and pfsense for a PPTP VPN (which is supported natively by Windows and iOS devices) behind UT.
