Default Install Webmin on Untangle

Does anyone have experience in successfully installing Webmin on Untangle?

Look in the hack forums. It is possible to install third party software. Not sure if webmin has been discussed before.

The better question, is why would you want to install Webmin on Untangle?

Webmin is a web driven administrative interface for a linux server. It's used with plugins to configure aspects of the operating system.

The Untangle UI, configures the UVM, which intern configures the base OS.

Using two systems to play with OS level components is only going to lead to tears.

So I ask the real question. What is your goal that makes you think Webmin is needed?

Sky-knight,
To be honest, I'm a Windows guy. I've been using Webmin to manage a few Linux servers. I find it very easy to use.

Untangle isn't Linux.

Untangle is Untangle, sure it's based on Linux but it is not Linux.

You cannot manage an Untangle server with Webmin, you must use the Untangle UI.

Besides, the UT UI is far easier to use than any Webmin.

All of these are true statements. But, what if you also wanted your UT box to contain an LDAP server. Then, having webmin installed would be a much easier way of maintaining and controlling that server. Command line just blows for some things.

We can argue endlessly that it's not wise to install other servers on your UT, but for some, that makes sense, because then they don't have to have another dedicated box to handle these extra servers.

I can see a need for webmin on a UT box, but not for controlling UT...

Interesting you should choose this example because Untangle already has an LDAP server which it controls through the untangle-vm and untangle-ldap-config. If you decide to configure it on your own with webmin you can be sure it will conflict with untangle. (Note: 9.1 no longer uses LDAP though)

Go right ahead, just don't complain/post when stuff doesn't work as that is fully expected.

I didn't realize that it was in there. I was just using that as an example of another server that a user might want to install in their UT server.

But, like I said, and you reiterated, do all of this with caution, because you're more or less on your own if you install other things into your UT that are not part of the base installation...

Your former comment about wanting to use Webmin because you aren't Linux savvy, doesn't jive with the desire to hack a working system designed to be easy to use.

So I'm confused... Good luck!

Installing additional specific server software on a UT box can cause major issues on the OS level and with UT. This is a security device. The UT install should be left alone to do what its made to do and that's it. Just my
