I am still trying to decide on hardware for an UT Server (Home Network, 4 PC's, One PC Heavy (Almost Continuous) Video Streaming, One PC Web Surfing + Intermittent Large File Download, Other Two PC's Web Surfing):
1. Dual Core Atom Foxconn Barebones (Currently on Sale at NewEgg) + 2 GB Memory + Used Intel Pro Dual Port NIC + Hard Drive + USB2.0 DVD-RW: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856119013 2. Foxconn Mini-ITX Desktop Case + Intel Mini-ITX Motherboard + 2 GB Memory + Pentium Dual Core or Core 2 Duo CPU + Used Intel Pro Dual Port NIC + Hard Drive + USB2.0 DVD-RW: Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811153099 Intel Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121381 3. ASUS Barebones Server + 2 GB Memory + Pentium Dual Core or Core 2 Duo CPU + Hard Drive + USB2.0 DVD-RW: ASUS Barebone Server: http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=XWXN9y7E3GmAcu2B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816110024 I know that Option 3 is probably overkill, but it sure would fit nice on my PC desk (with rubber feet added) under my LCD Monitor (space saving). Option 2 has a 150 Watt Power Supply. Many Power Supply Calculators say that this may be too small. However, Option 3 has a 180 Watt Power Supply and the ASUS product description for Option 3 says that Full Load is 89 Watts. Is a 150 Watt Power Supply big enough to handle a Pentium Dual Core or a Core 2 Duo? Does anyone have any preferences or opinions on each of the above options? Thanks in Advance. We use these for companies with 50 PCs and they run great. |

Do you think that its Dual Core Atom will handle my four (4) PC Home Network? Worst Case: Let's say that I do streaming video on two of the PC's and large file downloads (DVD ISO Images) on the other two PC's, all at the same time. Will I see any interruptions/pauses of the streaming videos or any significant slowdown in the DVD ISO download rates? Also, I plan to purchase the Home Package: Kaspersky Antivirus + eSafe Web Filtering Will the Supermicro Dual Core Atom be able to handle the above "Worst Case" with (installed and operating) Kaspersky + eSafe + All Other Free Packages - Clam AV - Free Web Filtering? Thanks in Advance. Last edited by TheKid7; 11-27-2009 at 07:17 AM.. |

Wow, I'm a fickle person. After reading some other posts in this forum about the Atom performance and other review sites, I've decided against it. Apparently a Celeron 440 uses just as much power (35W TDP) but performs better. And since I want a 1U server for a rack at home, the device that fits the bill is this one.
The only place where the Atom 330 performs better is in certain benchmarks where both cores can be used. In single core tasks, get the Celeron. |
