I'm running UT version 7 on an HP dl360g4 and in a virtual machine. During big downloads I get maybe 200kb /sec. If I switch my default gateway to my netgear router, I'll get over 900kb on the same client machine.
I have AV and adblocker running. I've read some of the other posts but why would UT restrict bandwidth so badly. This doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem. Is there a few simple steps I could make to try to correct this? |

Make sure you don't have QoS enabled, that is the first issue. Beyond that bandwidth is simply a function of available horsepower.

1 GB RAM is a reasonable minimum for Untangle, not counting your VM and your host OS. Your router doesn't do anything but route. You're asking for computer for a lot more than that. You want to have 2 GB or more in that box.

I have the same issue, I think its something to do with the virus blocker along with spyware, your best idea would be to turn off rack applications and test. I have also asked questions but no one seems to know..... and as you say its not a uncommon problem.

The RAM will probably help you a lot. zal is on target too. Its also a question of how you're measuring it (what you're doing) and what else in going on in the network. There's a lot of variables, but most people don't realize how all of the different pieces can play into the mix.
By the way, if you're a bit torrent user, that would be your answer right there.

Disabling the modules only has a marginal effect on overall Untangle performance. The two exceptions are the AV module, and the SPAM module. Both of these modules are very RAM and CPU intense.
The largest bandwidth issue for Untangle is bad network interfaces. Your little netgear POS has all cheap realtek network interfaces in it... but like MDH said the box isn't doing jack but pushing packets around. Untangle is providing a world of extra services that PROCESS those packets. It takes hardware. If you only have 1 gb of ram, and you have crappy cheap non-server grade network interfaces... don't expect to clear 5mb of transfer. That said, I have a PIII 900 with 1gm of ram on the floor here with two intel pro100 interfaces that I pushed to 30mb of transfer before it finally bailed out. Untangle is a security server, not a silly little router, use good hardware or pay the penalty... Is Untangle the most efficiently coded thing? No... heck... the thing is JAVA powered! But it does work, and it works really well, and it's very expandable.

I don't think the issue is around the hardware speed of the box, but the problems with rando speeds on differant sites. Here at work we have somewhat the same problems, connected directly to our cisco 857 we get nice 700k downloads. Connected on the Untangle on SOME downloads, not all its around 200k. We also have downloads stopping half way, a good example is VLC player download, stops halfway all the time. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I think its the likes of the virus blocker or attacker blocker slowing it down and or untangle 7.01....... 7.01 seems to be Untangle's version of windows ME.. my 2c worth.
