Default Untangle box failed, need to build a new one...was thinking Atom D5xx?

I had an 8 year old Dell running as an Untangle box, but it's pretty much fried now. I need to build a new one. I was thinking about the Atom D510 or something similar. This is for a simple home setup with only 2 users, sometimes more if people come over w/ their phones and want to get on wifi. The only really taxing thing going on is torrents.

I'd like to get a motherboard w/ the above mentioned atom, dual intel nic onboard (if possible), or 2 PCI slots (I have 4 Linksys gigabit NICs here, but would rather go the Intel route). Any suggestions?

My previous box had 2gb of RDRAM (told you it was old), which seemed to be plenty, so I figure I can just get 2gb of DDR2/3 and all will be fine.

Anything else I need to know before I start ordering stuff?

    Thanks,
    MR

I built a box using the atom processor for a client. D510 I think is. 3 full web users and 2 emailers. Works like a champ. We put 2 gig of ram in it and a intel nic and use the oboard nic. Nothing real heavy duty going on on this network so I felt comfortable with it.

nopers 2 gigs will be more than enough.. d510 is going to be much faster than your old setup..

Or you can go to http://www.untangleappliances.com/ne...ppliances.html
and get one that's guaranteed to work.. either 4 or 6 intel nics built right in to boot.

Yeah, I can't wait until we get the NG25s... they are going to fit this market rather nicely.

Check out the components I used in this build

    Ran Untangle great.
Dual Intel gigabit NICs, the Seagate Pipeline drive is designed for being used in stuff like DVRs, where 24x7 running happens, extra quiet, extra cool, extra low power consumption.

Intel 82574L - A friend of mine had a problem with this specific NIC and Untangle. Untangle wouldn't recognize them, but I think this was at 7.3. I'm assuming this isn't a problem anymore?

7.4 comes with an updated igb, e1000, and e1000e kernel module. At this point Untangle supports every Intel "interface" on the shelf. Technically speaking it should support the 10gig fiber, copper, and even the fibrechannel cards.

At least on a driver level, every one of Intel's cards is supported.

In that post that I linked to that hardware build, Untangle 7.31 was what was current (my second post in that thread), and was what I installed without a hitch, went in and ran without the slightest hiccup.

It ran great at home with 4-5 computers on, including the boy doing his online gaming. I can't speak for how it would handle torrents/p2p crap...I don't touch that stuff, but I do download a lot of things "normally" and it ran smooth as buttah. The newer dual core Atoms are pretty decent..I wouldn't use them for our Untangle setup at the office scanning 10,000+ e-mails per day, but for home..several users, or a smaller business office...it's quite good.

Check out these foxconn barebones systems:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=Intel%20Atom

I built one with an Atom 330 a little over a year ago for a home server (running server 2008), and it runs great. With only 2 users, that 330 (or even a 270) would be plenty for you. Just add RAM, hard drive, and DVD (optional if you have an external you can install from). You'd also need to find a low-profile nic to go with it.

Of course, I bought mine before it came out that foxconn is basically a sweatshop. I'm not sure I'd go back there. The main reason I'd consider it again is because I haven't seen an equivalent product from anyone else (If you know anyone else selling a small atom + motherboard + desktop case + power supply, let me know) -- plus the box itself rocks.

I would never use an Atom 330 or 270 with Untangle. Single core Atoms just can't cut it, even for 2 users. All it takes is the AV module and the SPAM module engaging at the same time to utterly flatten that box.

As for Foxconn being a sweat shop, you can't buy anything that doesn't pay them. They manufacture basic things like PCI slots, headers, and all the parts that actually make up a mainboard. They also manufacture the Wii. So not buying a mainboard from them doesn't change them much. It's going to take a bit more than normal market pressure to affect them.
