    Default Proliant DL360 G3 fans.

    System is a decommissioned HP Proliant DL360 G3. 2x3.06 Xeon, 2GB, 2x36GB.

Protecting home network with 3 Windows and 1 Mac plus Android phone.

Untangle 8.0 installed without issue and runs well with typical "lite rack". Seeing very low load on Untangle as expected.

Only problem is that I am getting calls from my deaf neighbors about the noise of the fans.

Installed lenny deliverables per untangle post86946 (thanks, yeoldestonecat)

HP health installed fine but fans will not slow. I did not see a "Step 4" occur in HP health installation (per thread). Set SW2 System Maintenance Switch S3 to the "OFF" position per an HP support thread I cannot link here yet.

Still no joy. I am now assuming there is a fan failure which is setting all fans to max (unlikely as front panel LED is not showing failure) or it is a BIOS setting.

Have acquired HP Start Smart and acquired the BIOS from the HP thread which is rumored to help, and that is on the schedule for tonight's work.

Eager to see this machine quiet down. Intend to install in basement away from occupants but the noise as is, is too loud.

    Comments welcome.

    Nice forum you got here.

I had the same issue recently on a DL320 G2. Somebody at ubuntu forums had made the packages for ubuntu (no official ubuntu support for this one). So I installed those. Noise problem is gone. I do get some SEG Fault on boot up related to some hp stuffs. But the noise is gone, so I don't really care.

I have installed Untangle onto another DL360 G3 and it behaves the same.

    # hplog -f

    returns:

ID TYPE LOCATION STATUS REDUNDANT FAN SPEED
1 Var. Speed Processor Zone Normal N/A Low ( 10)
2 Var. Speed System Board Normal N/A Low ( 10)

Still it is loud. I assume that this must be normal for a 1U. I guess we will put them into service in basement areas and see if we can position some foam nearby to kill some noise.

    Thanks to all.

Man doesn't that thing pull like 2 amps of power? I just rebuilt my home UT box with a dual core Atom, 2GB and a 30GB SSD in a 1U supermicro chassis. The only thing that makes noise is the PSU fan and that's minimal. I had a celeron with a huge fan + a loud 7200RPM sata drive. It's more or less silent now, compared to what I was using. I also replaced my big 16 port netgear with a 8 port netgear and setup an 802.11n WAP since my new desktops have N.

Yep, you are talking 40mm fans at high speed, that make a high pitch noise. Just stepping up to a 2U is less noisy, as the larger fans make a deeper pitch that doesn't sound as loud even though it is.

It is not normal for a 1U, it's common..yes, but it's not mandatory. I have Untangle running on quite a few HP Proliant 1U models...including many DL320 of various generation models, and as soon as I install the Lenny Deliverables...ahhh...they quiet right down and remain so.

I have had mixed results on the DL360 G3.....I believe there's a difference in production runs across that G3 line....on some the Lenny Deliverables have worked just fine, and on others...it didn't make an impact. I'm guessing there's a difference in the fan controllers depending on production run you have...although I haven't explored it further.

I have the following 2U server: HP Proliant DL380 G3 2x 2.4GHz/ 4GB / 6 x 36GB 15K/RAID, and I'm only running 4 of the drives, not all 6. This system has all 8 or 9 fans, or whatever the max is. After I installed Lenny deliverables, it didn't make any difference in the noise level. It's the same as it was BEFORE installing the hp-health stuff.

It reports that most of the fans are running at 10-15%. I'd hate to hear this thing IF they ever sped up, because even at 10-15% it's still pretty loud. Loud is a relative term, but this thing is definitely moving some air.

I was hoping that it would have slowed down the fans a little bit, and quieted it down some. I just installed it in my basement mechanical room, so it's out of sight, out of mind.
