    Hi Nisse Hult,

What is the hardware spec for the Trend IGSA?

Untangle can be run in a VM.
There is a Virtual Appliance for Untangle on sf.net.

    Hi (Hej) Nisse,

    I found this:
    The internals
The device runs on a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. It comes with two 512 MB RAM modules that use up all the RAM slots on the motherboard. As a result you don't get any free slot for including any additional RAM if required. The device also ships with an 80 GB hard disk. But this hard disk is not responsible for storing and loading the OS, rather it is used for buffering and quarantining files. On the other hand, the OS which is essentially a stripped down and hardened version of Linux (Kernel 2.6.14) is stored and booted from a 512 MB Compact Flash Type 2 Card. This technique keeps the OS and infected files on two totally different media. For future proofing, the IGSA also has a spare PCI-X 133 MHz/64 bit slot.
So if it is correct you need to get a Graphic card on to it. (then it might work)

How big is the network that you want to protect?

I wonder, could you run an Untangle with no graphics card? I mean, obviously you'd need one to install it, go through initial setup wizard so that you can access it from the network, and of course enable ssh. Then you ought to be able to shut it down and pull the graphics card.

It wouldn't be worth the bother of course unless there's some reason it's not convenient to keep a graphics card in there all the time (like the case doesn't really accomodate it well, or you need the slot for another LAN card?).

Untangle needs the graphics card, otherwise X doesn't startup properly and weirdness ensues.

Now that said, IPMI virtual graphics seem to work.

    right, since that's onboard graphics.

thanks for the confirmation that Untangle really wouldn't be happy without a graphics card. I doubt it would have ever come up for me, but useful information for the back-pocket, as it were.

Hi all and thanks for all replys.
I have installed Untangle on a IBM eServer 335 insted. Maybe the IGSA can be a project later :-)
