    Default Untangle server becomes unresponsive

I have an untangle server that periodically stops transmitting traffic and becomes unresponsive. This happens about every two weeks but happened twice yesterday. As I can't log in I have just rebooted it which resolves the problem.

-Is this likely to be a hardware issue?
-Is there any way to do some troubleshooting (remembering that the server is unresponsive so troubleshooting will have to be done post-reboot)?

Certainly possible. What kind of box is it? How old? How much RAM, kind of RAID, etc. You might try running H/W diagnostics on it?

Was brand new at installation about six months ago. 2GB RAM, no RAID, three NICs (one onboard and two PCI cards)

I'm assuming that this sort of problem would be indicative of hardware failure as I would hope that Untangle wouldn't just crash under the sort of light usage it is experiencing in this environment (internal exchange server, internal pbx, five internal users, two external users accessing terminal server and exchange).

If it is hardware it would be cheaper to just replace it and copy back the config from the old one than spend too much time trying to work out what is wrong with it.

We use Untangle in both VM and bare metal configurations and don't have this issue. I'd put money on hardware. Just because it is new does not mean it won't fail. Find a diagnostic you can run on the box to see if something flaky is going on. I've seen bad RAM modules do all sorts of wierd things. Try reseating the modules. There are free memory testing utilities you can download.

are you able to bring up the webGUI, ssh into the box, or use a keyboard/mouse directly connected to the box?

if so, i'd check the logs in /var/log and /var/log/uvm for clues.
if not, i'd still check the logs, but i'd also test the hardware or give it a try on different hardware if the logs yielded no clues.
