it is something with the system board

i put that hard drive and cd-rom in another system and it loads fine.

the bummer part is i bought this brand new board and RAM just for this.

so it would be nice to get it up and running on it.

I read another post yesterday or today about the same motherboard. I don't know who wrote it, but they were reporting issues as well. Asus has been hit or miss. You might try looking at BIOS settings.

nVidia chipsets and Linux don't mix...

That said I found the following on a Gentoo forum.
    * Install CD should be run with "acpi=off" parameter, otherwise minimal root won't be mounted
    * Installed kernel should be run with "noapic" parameter, otherwise all incoming network traffic will be delayed (IRQ issue)

i am giving up on the board. I have tried untangle on several systems now. I have concluded this. When it works to load it seems to run and be very stable. But, and maybe it is me and bad luck, I have had some real hardware issues with untangle.

if you are using an LCD display screen, try it with an older CRT monintor. Some of the LCDs do not display the synch ranges required during the first setup / boot for some linux distro's. Is it an onboard video or add-in card ? If it's a card. replace it with an older one.

Bad luck? No, it was a bad purchase. That mainboard is specifically designed for Windows XP Media Center. The nVidia 6100 series chipset has multiple options and risers for all sorts of video outputs and the platform is set in a micro ATX. All this is meant to be stuffed into a smaller than normal case that looks like a DVD player and crammed into someone's entertainment cabinet. That board rocks for this purpose, I've built a few. I've also used the Giga-Byte and MSI versions of this board to good effect.

What you are running into isn't even an Untangle problem. It is a Linux problem. Linux isn't infinitely compatible with everything and to be honest neither is windows. The difference is most of us have over the years gotten pretty good at getting Windows to work, while our Linux experience by comparison is purely infantile.

So I repeat, if you want a UT box to work the first time. Stick to main boards with Intel chipsets. Yes, you can use others, but they may or may not work out of the box. Heck, even Intel fails at times, but at least the vast majority of boards with their chips on them work the first time.

    Default Incompatibilities

Linux distros do often have to wait a bit for drivers etc, being the poor cousin of OSs, but occasionally it's a bit more nefarious than that.

Foxconn intentionally sabotaging Linux installs. Jerks.

Wow that is an interesting read cngordon. I have long known that for some odd reason only Intel builds in full PCI specs in their boards, but I had no clue some manufacturers were intentionally nerfing ACPI.

All this just validates why every time a platform goes out of service why I end up putting two weeks into researching a replacement board. Linux exaggerates this time exponentially, and ultimately you don't know until you try. Fortunately if the board claims support for RedHat or SuSE generally it will work.
