Hi to all,
I'm new to Untangle, so forgive my ignorance ... I work at a hospital school in birmingham and we get our internet access through the council's proxy server, which we cannot bypass. I would like to use Untangle for additional filtering/logging. The council already do filtering themselves so we are not too worried about protection, more about logging We have 10 sites, all connected together via the council's wan, routed together into one network. We all look to their proxy for internet. If we put the server on one of our sites, both of the nic's would end up on the "internal" side of the network. Can we use Untagle in this odd configuration? would I somehow need to configure proxy settings on the external interface? Regards, Adam |

I don't understand why you would really want to do this.
Sounds a bit confusing if you ask me. Would it not be easier to check if you can get access to Councils logs and stuff. Rather than adding extra laod to your network. I'm sure it probably would work: Depends on your setup. Your link to councils network - Untangle - Hospital network. Use it in bridge mode. Assuming you have some sort of line linking you back to councils main network. |

Hi joe,
The reason why I would like to try and implement something like this is because we need extra control and monitoring over blocked sites. It is very difficult to get hold of their logs and takes ages for sites to be blocked. They are also currently having awful problems with their own monitoring system. We all have a 10mb fibre back to the council, which has been setup so all our sites can see each other, but not the councils private network. We only get to hit their proxy. When in bridge mode, how can i tell untangle to direct web traffic through their proxy? All other inter-site traffic must pass normally over the links, only web traffic should be directed through external proxy ...????? Regards, Adam |

Adam,
I don't think you can tell untangle to go through a proxy, I also don't think you need to. In bridge mode untangle kind of just scans traffic as it passes by it. So providing your clients are setup to go to the proxy it should work. Only thing I can suggest is that you try testing Untangle to see if it works that way. I'm sure it does. Only thing I wonder is will all web traffic be seen as going to your proxy address before it goes to the web. It might look like clients are trying to access the proxy server. So untangle might only see clients looking to get to the proxy address rather than an actual web site address, there trying to reach. Simplest thing to do is test it for yourself. |

I have finally managed to get untangle to work with a county council proxy, embc in this case. You do not have to set anything up on the client end. Basically the passthrough system works fine. It is not completely up and running as I am having module problems.
