Hello,
I wondering a few things. 1. Can I use untagle to do just spamfilters, like a spam appliance say from sonicwall would do, it just sits on my local network and mail is forwarded to the untagle device than to my e-mail server. 2. can I do the above via VM, say with VirtualBox or vmware server that is running on a server. Welcome to the forums. Yes, you can just use the Spam Blocker. Many people start out using few modules, then add more as they feel more comfortable with the solution.
The Untangle needs to sit inline. Basically, the external interface in front on the mail server, and the internal interface connects to the mail server. WAN-Router-Switch-Untangle-Mail server. Most likely, when you want to filter all the users and utilize all the modules, you will need to move the Untangle to WAN-Router-Untangle (bridge mode)-Switch-users and servers, or you can use the Untangle in a router mode like WAN-Untangle (router mode)-Switch-users and servers.

Thanks for the reply,
maybe I'm not fallowing. a sonicwall spam filter has one nic on it. it just plugs into the switch, the exchange box just plugs into the switch. after that I just set up the exchange smtp connector to forward to the sonicwall, and in sonicwall it's set to send all mail to the exchange box, and to send out all mail sent to it from within the network(exchange). from the firewall I have port 25 pointing at the sonicwall. I'm looking to do this same type of thing with the untangle but via VM. I was thinking I would just run in bridge mode, set the external IP to something on my internal network, than change the settings on the firewall to point to untangle and set untangle to send to exchange, and set exchange to send to untangle maybe that's what you said, but it just didn't click in my head? |

Untangle needs to be inline so two NICs. We do have a single NIC install available, however, this does not work on certain networks.

You will only assign the external interface an IP address. The internal interface on the Untangle will be set to bridge.

You do not need to change any IP address or gateway info on your exchange. Since the Untangle will be in a bridge mode, and inline, it will just work.

Please note, if you are going to run the Untangle on VM, you will run into few snags unless you are really good at VMware networking. Trust me on this, I get all confused with the VMware networking. If you are planning to use VMware, and Untangle in a bridgemode, you might want to check this out.
http://alittlestrange.com/tfoa/2008/...-bridged-mode/ Your other option is to run the Untangle on a stand alone dedicated box.
