POP mail will be slow if it is being scanned by Untangle. When Untangle scans pop mail, it has to download the entire message and scan it. SMTP mail it just scans the headers, so its much faster.

they both scan the whole mail, but POP gets scanned as it gets downloaded (after you hit "get mail") while SMTP is scanned as its being sent to your mail server.

The difference means when you come into the office in the morning all your SMTP mail has been scanned, but all your POP scanning takes place after you hit "get mail."

If you want it to go faster, get more CPU. Other than that, yeah POP3 and IMAP scanning is noticeably slow by the end user. SMTP scanning is just as slow, but it's FAR more comprehensive and the slow down is in a position where the user doesn't feel it.
