Question Install of ESXi 4.1 tools in 8.0?

I'm not really too familiar with the inner workings of UT in general, but have a good grasp on common concepts of networking, etc. I have installed the tools in ubuntu server via the command line previously but seem to be having a brainfart doing it in UT.

So here's the question/procedure I have so far.
    1) Mount the guest tools cd by logging into terminal and doing a
    "Mount /media/cdrom"
    2) Copy the vmware tools.tar.gz file to a directory
    3) tar xvf of same file to expand it to a directory and run its perl installer script.

Get an error requiring the gcc compiler.

*I am stumped at this point*
I am unable to grab the build-essentials using apt-get. Seems as if it refuses to grab from the respository. I am unsure if it is commented out or not in some config file.

The 8.0 upgrade of my 7.x machine bombed, so I reloaded from scratch instead of going the ovf route.

You can download a VMware version of UT form source forge.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/untangle/files/

Otherwise you need to edit the sources.list and download gcc and some other packets.

Yeah, thanks for the pointer to sources.list

I like doing things the hard way, it makes me learn

    If that is the case...

1.) uncomment debian repositories in sources.list
2.) use apt to install the kernel headers, and the build-essential packages
    3.) recomment the debian repositories
4.) extract and install the vm tools.

Now the real details are a bit more hairy than that, if you go looking in the how to section both Webfool and I have written separate tutorials that detail how to do this.
