This issue is transitory. If you have the time zone issue that prevents X from starting on bootup, it will stop showing the issue once the server advances far enough to not be creating stuff in the "past".

When it comes to my appliances they will manifest the issue after the unit gets online for a period of 12 hours.

Also, if all you have is a random UI not starting. The unit is working FINE. Just because the console UI isn't there doesn't mean Untangle isn't there. If you can get to the web UI don't worry about it! You know how to work around the physical console issue if you need it. You shouldn't be using it. So if your box wants to stay "broken" enjoy a more efficient UT server that isn't wasting resources on a GUI that isn't used.

Moral of the story, always set BIOS clock to UTC/GMT before installing Untangle.
Cheers, Col
Just made a fresh install of Untangle v9.02 32bit.

After the first reboot, no more GUI.

Then i tried the "kiosk" command...

su -kiosk doesnt work
su - kiosk worked for me.

Thanks sky-knight!

this.

Don't install Untangle when disconnected from the network.

You can install Untangle just fine while disconnected. The catch is, you can't do that on a NEW machine. If you do, as far as the machine is concerned Epoch is Hong Kong time, then as soon as it gets online it resets to UTC where it's supposed to be.

Now your logs are a day out of whack and X flips its wig. This will only happen ONCE! Once that hardware clock is set to UTC once as long as you don't go resetting it, this bug will never manifest on that hardware ever again.

Of course if you manually set the hardware clock to UTC before you install Untangle, the issue is solved before you even get started. Heck it doesn't even have to be particularly accurate... just within a few hours and you're ok.

I've also not been able to duplicate this condition on a box with hardware clock configured for any local US timezone during install. I'm not sure where the threshold is, but it's less than Pacific time, and that's the farthest out of whack local US time will get.
