Good evening,
I'm not entirely sure what's going on with this one, hoping someone can help me out. I'm at the console, trying to get to the terminal on my Untangle box, but when I hit terminal, type in my password, and then press Enter, the terminal box disappears. If I type in the wrong password, it flashes on the screen before closing "The su password is incorrect" (or something close to that). If I type in a password I know is correct (we use keepass), it just closes. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2, I try logging in as root, with a known good password, and it says login incorrect. I'm at a loss. I was able to log in with this password just an hour ago. Can anyone help? |

The terminal password is not the same password as the administration password.
You would have set it the first time you open the terminal.

And just in case, if you bought a box from me, the password has a default setting. So if you have an NG anything, call me I'll get you squared away.
If it's a stock install, then it was configured when you first opened the terminal as DMorris said. If you've lost that password, there is a procedure to reset it. However, it's best if you reinstall.

Hey guys,
Thank you for replying (new member so I went away while the posts were reviewed). I'm going to try to connect right now, I am able to log in to the web interface using the Admin account, but when I try to console with the root account, the console just closes. Is there a lockout policy for the root user after so many failed attempts? I am wondering if me trying to connect via SSH (renamed the ssh_do_not_start and started the SSH) locked the root user and that's why I'm unable to use the terminal on the console. I thought that maybe after several days the root would become unlocked. I'm not able to restart the untangle box anytime soon, so we've just been letting it go since it's working, I'm just trying to troubleshoot another problem. Thanks, Kyle |

No, there is no auto-lockout. If you're typing the password and it's not working, it's either wrong, or something else is wrong on the box.
If you contact support we can reset the root password for you.

Wait did you disable root logins via SSH? That would mean you can't login unless you're on the physical console. The SSH services won't let you use the root account.
