Default After install some users dropping connection

New install on an old Dell GX270
I added a a nic card to the integrated nic on the motherboard.
    It's a Pentium4 3.2ghz workstation for testing.

    I'm running in Bridge mode.

    T1 > Cisco 2800 Router > Untangle Box > Cisco Catalyst 4806 Switch > Lan

Looks good but right after bringing it online, users who are accessing database outside of our LAN over the WAN to another department lose connection and have to sign in again on the remote DB and non committed data is of course lost.

Some users are also losing connection to our Exchange Server and can't send email until it mysteriously reconnects. Exchange is hosted in another Domain with the proper trusts in place.

I ruled out trouble on the DB and Exchange side by unplugging the UT box. All problems vanished until I reconnected it and brought it up again.

All other network access works fine as well and internet access. It's just these two connections to other networks for our DB and Email.

I have Web Filter and App Control apps running with default settings. All other apps are off.

Any ideas why I would see intermittent drop offs of connections?

    Thanks.

Intermittent connection losses can be caused by many things.

1.) Hardware, cheap desktop network interfaces cause these issues. If it isn't Intel, or Broadcom, expect issues.
2.) Untangle is a UTM, it filters traffic very differently than a regular firewall. It WILL impose performance limitations based on your hardware, what you are filtering, and traffic types transiting the device. Predicting real performance on the device is quite impossible from the outside. However, given the nature of the traffic that you've mentioned, I'm going to suggest you create bypass rules for both sets of troublesome traffic. Why have the UVM messing with traffic landing on a trusted SQL server? Why play with traffic going to a trusted Exchange service? The default rack should be processing traffic going to unknown places, save the resources on Untangle for traffic that needs securing, not the traffic that is already safe.

What database is it? Postgres/MSQL/MySQL? Check logs of App control, logs of firewall etc. I usually find the answer in the logs.

I connect to DB's on 2 external VPS with no problems. No special rules.

How do you connect to the databases?

I did have a dell GX260 running fine, so can report that the internal NIC on that was fine.

I have used the cheapest of chinese knock-off cards, in multiple configurations, over the last few days and never had a problem with NIC's. I have used at least 10 cards under $20 and they all worked. I only ever had problems with the more expensive ones that came off servers.
