Default Running Other Software in Untangle

    Hello,

I'm a bit curious about it being possible to run other software in Untangle. For example, I want to set up a Teamspeak 3 server, however, the hardware which was slated for that purpose is now running Untangle . Is it possible to run a TS3 server inside Untangle? Or is there any way possible to get both running on the same hardware at the same time perhaps by using some sort of VM software?

    Thank you,

    Teilani

Any additions to Untangle are not supported and are usually damaged on upgrade.

Teamspeak 3 is a completely self contained thing if you use the SQLite DB it defaults to.

If there is a software application that could work along side Untangle without causing any extra side effects, that would be it. My only concern would be CPU load, at times TS3 eats significant CPU power, during these times Untangle likely will be too, this could lead to some audio issues.

I would NOT attempt using TS3 with a mysql database on Untangle.

Thank you for the responses. I'm looking for a solution to cut down on the amount of PCs running in the house and was hoping to get all our peripheral devices combined onto one hardware platform (Network Storage, TS3, Untangle).

For that, I'd take a decent workstation and do the home work to make Citrix Xenserver run. Then you can have three VMs, each separate and supportable.

TS by itself isn't a problem. However, network storage on Untangle to me is the height of stupidity. You just don't attach personal or business information to the device that is on the Internet. Then again I suppose in this age of the cloud, I'm a dinosaur in such things. But hey, I won't have my identity stolen because Google's back end was hacked, again...

Probably a little tardy to the party here but for home use I made a cheap (<$200) mini system that pulls around 40 watts that works great for Untangle. I have a second one as my gateway device (Astaro - yes, I know, I'm the devil). Prices are up a bit now (mainly the hard drive) but you could still build a brand new compact and energy efficient system quite cheap. Happy to share the build list if you like. Sorry this is a bit off topic but you mentioned home build so thought I would chime in.

I want the network storage simply to store large video files. Any sensitive files and information is secure on a network that has no access to the net.

Is there freeware that offers a similar solution to that of Xenserver? It seems a tad on the expensive side for something that amounts to a hobby.

Also, the hardware in the machine I'm using for Untangle and hopefully some other stuff is only around 4 years old. It's a dual-core AMD Athlon X2 with 4GB of RAM and a solid midrange ASUS mobo that I built myself. Thats pretty mild as far as servers go, but it rocks for what I use it for.

ESXi would be a good choice for virtualization. It's free for what you are doing. I didn't check the HCL but if it's only 4 years old it should be fine I would guess. The only factor would be the NIC. VMWare supports a fairly limited set of NICs.

Thank you. I'll definitely be trying out ESXi. I can't wait to see how this works.

    Xenserver is also free.
