    Question Install on Virtual Machine?

    Hi everyone,

2 weeks back I bought a new server which is installed with the open source Xen and have 2 virtual machines in there.

If possible, I would like to use the same box for untangle.

My question, can I reuse this server for untangle? Will there be any impact if using virtual machine?

Or do I need to buy another server (1 processor, 4GB ram, 500GB HDD SATA) dedicated for this untangle installation?

Do I need a dedicated network card just for untangle alone?

Below is the specs for my current server:-

    - NEW Intel "Romley" platform with dual processor capable in 1U 4-bay rackmountable HPC server system
    - 1 x Intel Xeon SIX-Core E5-2620 2.0Ghz processors
    - 7.2GT/s Intel QPI speed, 2 QPI Links, 15Mb Intel Smart Cache,
Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 & Intel Virtualization (VT-x)
    - Intel C606 chipset
    - Dual QPI Links
    - 32GB ECC DDR3 1333Mhz RDIMM memory
    - 4 memory channels per CPU
    - 1 x 60GB 2.5" SATA3 SSD (for OS/Apps Rapid Startup)
    - 2 x 2TB 3.5", 6Gb/s, 7.2K rpm SAS HDDs(SET AS RAID 1)
    - Support 4 x 3.5" Hot-swappable Drive Bays
    - 2 x 1GbE Intel Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports
    - Intel C606 SAS RAID Controller supporting RAID level 0,1 & 10 - Integrated Onboard Graphic Controller with VGA port
    - 600W 80PLUS Platinium High-Efficiency PSU

Any help from this community? Thanks in advance.

we don't recommend virtualization, though plenty of people have it working - just make sure you give it enough resources.

noted and thanks. if i use a dedicated server, will this box will be sufficient to manage 50 users? maybe extend to 100 users.

this box only can max up to 1 processor.

    - Intel platform with single-socket quad-core processor in 1U rackmountable server system
    - 1 x Intel Xeon Quad-Core E3-1230 3.20Ghz processor
    - 5.0GTI, 8Mb Intel Smart Cache, DMI, Hyper-Threading, Intel
    Turbo Boost 2.0, Intel Virtualization (VT-x) & (VT-d) Technology - Intel C202 PCH chipset
    - 4Gb ECC DDR3 1333Mhz memory
    - 1 x 500Gb 3.5", 6Gb/s, 7.2K rpm SATA Enterprise HDDs
    - 2 x 1GbE Intel Ethernet LAN ports
    - Integrated Onboard Graphic Controller with VGA port
    - Integrated IPMI 2.0 with Dedicated IPMI LAN port with
    remote iKVM
    - 250W High Efficent PSU

    Any help? Thanks.

    Hi Ericmachine,

You have the hardware requirements here
    http://wiki.untangle.com/index.php/H...e_Requirements

But yes the unit will work for 50 users.

Lol that would work for 1000 users, tuned properly of course.

I like the idea of virtual machines. I have three networks with three UTs plus two MS Exchange plus DC on one XenServer 6. Works really nice.
Firewalls on virtual machines are always heavy discussed. There are many pros and cons.
You have one great disadvantage: you can not install XenServer Tools. So you do not have gigabit LAN.
In your case I would use 2 cores an 4 GB RAM. With one core it is a bit slow on my side.
You need minimum 3 network cards:
one for mangagement of XenServer, one for LAN, one for WAN.
For backup you can use QuorumSoft Alike. Works fine for me.

    Thanks everyone

actually for that specs, I can't find any server 1u specs lower than that here? hmm, unless I customise myself but I can't find the rack casing?

do you customise yourself? i rather buy something cheaper and can support maybe 50 - 100 users. Any place I can refer online to buy cheap servers?

You can get lower specs in a 1u format, you just need to look a little harder.

I'm not allowed to make specific recommendations outside of the Commercial forums.

hmm, you mean i could get support if i go for the commercial version? hmm?

i already spoke to 3 - 4 vendors, none can do 1u with lower specs. At least all with quad core, total around USD$800/server.

Not sure who you talked with, but I can promise you what you seek is out there.

Smaller usually comes with a higher price tag, so it may be budget goofing you up. Hard to say, since I don't have a clear idea of what exactly you're after.

Suffice to say, you have all the options in the world for a 1u device, or smaller to operate Untangle at all user levels.

Also, to my fellow Citrix buddy up there. Once Untangle goes Debian 6, that problem should go away nicely. Debian 5 requires a custom kernel to work within a Citrix environment, Debian 6 has no such problems. I've made an Untangle work with the addons, but in the process the kernel was replaced, certain drivers and customizations Untangle needs were destroyed, and the UVM fell on its face. The OS works fine, it's Untangle software that doesn't play well with that custom kernel going away!

Still, yet another reason to be ready and drooling on the version of Untangle that gives us Debian 6 as a platform.
