    Default Installation Help Please

    Hello All,

I am very new to Linux and first time with Untangle. SO please bear with me...

I have having troubles with Installing Untangle as a bridge on a Ubuntu box. I just did a fresh install of the latest Ubuntu. Afterwards, I followed the doc for installation of Untangle with Ubuntu. Here is the problem, one Untangle will not boot. I also get a no-ip config can be found when the Untangle script is looking at my nics. I have 2 nic cards in the box. Here is my setup...I have my cable modem, then the Untangle/Ubuntu box then my wireless router then the rest of my computers. If I do an ifconfig, eth0 (the line plugged from my cable modem) gets an ISP IP. Eth1 (line going to wireless router) gets nothing. None of my computers can get onto the internet except for the Ubuntu box. When installing Untagle via the script, do I have to have the box in the proper setup, like above, or do I just need to have an active internet connection on 1 nic? Dose Untangle configure the nics to be enternal and internal? When I reboot the machine after Untangle appears to be installed, it goes through its boot up, then fails and boots up Ubuntu.

    Any help would be great.

Can someone verify this setup...becuase I have a cable modem and a wireless router, my box cannot be between them right? I would have to set this up as a re-router. Cable modem to Wireless router, then from router to my Ubuntu box that has UT on it? Right now the setup goes Cable Modem, going to eth0 on Ubuntu box, eth1 going to wireless router, 2 lines from wireless router going to other computers.

OK, there are several things here, so I'll take them one at a time. Most of it is just informational until your error message is resolved, which I can't help with at this time.

Once untangle is up and running, each NIC is assigned as "internal" or "external". The only way to know which is which is to log into the Untangle management system, click Networking and then the Interfaces tab. Unplug one of the cables and see which one shows as disconnected. You might have the cables switched. The internal NIC you need to assign an IP to, which will be the gateway IP for your internal devices (if you use UT in router mode).

As to the order of the devices, the normal method (using your equipment) is to have this:

internet ---- modem ---- untangle (router mode) --- wireless router (with built-in switch)

In this setup you'd use UT in router mode, unless the modem had the ISP IP and did DHCP, then you'd use untangle in bridge mode.

Now sometimes it's tricky to get one router directly connected to another to work properly. If you can change your wireless router to be in bridge mode, that would be the best of both worlds. For now I would try using the wireless router as just a switch and hook PCs up via cable until you get the system working. That's one reason why I like Belkin wireless routers, as they can be changed into a wireless bridge with the click of the mouse.

Regarding your error message for the installation and setup of Untangle, I'm not (yet) familiar with it and will have to let someone else here with more experience than I to comment on it.

OK, I rebooted the machine and ran the Untangle Gateway Administration, which brings up the config for Untangle. (COOL !!!) Ok so I know I am doing this right, how can I use Untangle in a bridge mode? Where would it sit? If I am forced to use it as a router, then I will place it between the cable modem and wireless router. Once I figure out which nic is which, the external nic would be set to obtain address automatically and using the DHCP of the modem, and then the internal nic would be set to a static, something the same as my router or different address? Can the static IP be anything? So it doesn't have to match the wireless router... Please let me know. Thank you.
