i was considering implementing a squid proxy on my work network, Untangle is front end security, and i thought that using a squid proxy i could cut down on bandwidth but also have better monitoring of sites people are going to to stop any high bandwidth sites people seem to keep finding.
I was reading it also does FTP cache and other items so over all it could help cut back on bandwidth usage to keep our Inet bill down. Any other significant reasons to implement a squid proxy + untangle to make a network... better? Or any reasons not to? |

Reasons not to? Windows Update...
Reasons to? You like pulling your hair out with all the "web 2.0" stuff that isn't proxy incompatible?

Yes, but that said. For networks that access mostly static content they can make a world of difference. It's just that pages like msn.com are very common these days, and they set the expiration values on their content so short the proxy doesn't get a chance to really do much.
