Default UT / ISA - Noob Question

I briefly played with an untangle test setup a while back - it went like this:

ISA X2 (+ other misc servers) - UT - Users.

What I found was that untangle only filtered internet if I removed isa/proxy settings - it worked sweet. (we have isa set to use port 8080). Had no need to change default gateway settings.

I recently implemented a test setup in the same fashion and was starting to see some results although I was uncertain of their accuracy (could be correct, never got to throroughly check).

Then yesterday I relocated the box so it goes between isa boxes and our servers and users as this enabled scanning of our smtp mail flow to our exchange as well as significantly reducing the load on the UT box.

Now I seem to hardly be getting any web monitoring/filtering at all - a few pc's are working but not all. I've noticed if I keep blank setting for proxy and set default gateway to the ut box, then it behaves. Just thought I would check this is expected behaviour before I change our dhcp scope settings.

Also I'm sure previously I didn't notice any real delay from the untangle device, but now with it as default gateway for my pc, web pages seem to often hang for about 1/2sec up to a second or two. The box is an old p4 ht 3.0 with 3Gb of ram, cpu usage doesn't seem to go over 2% - is this delay normal or can it be tweaked? Or could this be because email is also being scanned (even with the low reported cpu usage).

Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

I think I have sussed out the issue - will post back my findings if I have cracked it.
