I monitor my instances of untangle, as well as the network switches via OpenNMS, and see this kind of graphs, as well as alerts if anything spikes above normal amounts. This is really something better done outside the UTM, since it can go down. This separate box can tell me of an outage, and show near live data (10 seconds old for my network).

Give the attached PDF a look for one of my test untangle boxes.

Generally from Untangle you get network segment usage, then drill down to individual switches downstream to track usage by vlan/port.

    FYI

If you install the Bandwidth Control as a Trial and let it run out, you at least get the realtime bandwidth monitor which still functions. I went to that screen, set Auto Refresh On, downloaded an ISO and it correctly stated that the correct machine was downloading something and using the bandwidth.

I do applaud UT for allowing this even after the trial runs out and I think this should be free, as it is.

Now, the one thing I do not like and I think would be beneficial to UT and end users, is that the bandwidth Reports do NOT seem to work anymore (if they ever did). I think that if you install the Bandwidth Control module, paid for or not, UT Reports should show the bandwidth usage per IP etc. So that way when I get my monthly reports, I know who/what is sending/receiving the most bandwidth.

Why is this good for Untangle even if the module is not paid for? Well, if you notice you really are having a QoS problem, one that would be too difficult to setup manually, this would sell the Bandwidth Control module itself. Otherwise, you can simply use the near real time bandwidth status and get the reports saying what is going on.

Not sure if anyone disagrees with this but if so please chime in one way or the other.

Warhed: I absolutely agree with you. More information provide sales opportunities.

As for network monitoring, have any of you tried ntop? Its a simple linux app that could be run on the firewall. It has its own web interface, and can drill down to single ips, and supports remote probes, and clients. It can also store the information in rrd format for graphing.

This would definitely be a good tool to be integrated into Untangle.

    Have Fun!

As of version 9, the most recent, the Real Time Bandwidth Monitoring no longer works at all. I have started a new post here: http://forums.untangle.com/showthrea...810#post144810

And hope that this is something Untangle will enable again. I see nothing wrong with having a firewall or forward facing UTM having this feature standard and free. I see major problems with not being able to see at all if something is saturating your network/device.

My friggin DDWRT unit allows this at least, why not Untangle? Its safe to wait for their response first but I am kinda pissed.

    Default BandwidthD

    I've read the post here:
    http://forums.untangle.com/reports/1...h-usage-2.html

But unfortunately it does not seem to work any more. I do have SSH enable, I am in the Untangle unit (iftop works great for imemdiate info) but I want to use BandwidthD to gather info over a period of time. I have WinSCP'd into the unit and dropped in the latest package but I cannot install it.

Could someone be able to maybe create a completey walk through on how to add BandwidthD to Untangle v9? I wish I knew Linux well enough to correct it and go but I haven't been able to.

Also, is it possible to include BandwidthD in UT but just disabled and not working, like IFTOP?

    Thanks
