    Default Redundancy

Can we have redundancy , for example having

    internet> ut1 II ut2 > LAN switch

for either gateway mode or in-line bridge mode such that when one UT box fails the other one takes over automatically? If so then how can one go about it?

Two bridge mode boxes, with supported bypass cards can do this. I have hardware that is prototyping in this realm, Untangle only officially supports the Interface Master's bypass nic they offer in one of their higher end units.

Now if I can figure out how to swap out Untangle's LAN IP address via command line, I can get basic active - passive clustering to work. We're hanging out waiting for the "new kernel" because it comes with new toys for this stuff.

I have a dual system at a remote site.

    Code:
                         |------UT 1-----|
    ---Internet----| | --------LAN
                         |------UT 2-----|
DHCP is on for UT1 and off for UT2. If UT1 fails, I remotely turn on UT2 DHCP for traffic to flow through UT2. It's not automatic but it only takes a few minutes.

sky-knight thanks for the insight, am not quite sure though that i can get a hold of those fancy cards where am at. am extremely grateful for your quick response.yes am very much hoping for a kernel with such a toy with such a function.

jcoffin, thats an extremely clever approach, hadnt quite thought of that , i had imagined that UT had thought about this in their sw because they have things like WAN failover. anyways its a worthwhile try that DHCP very handy clever trick, but my question is: does it mean that you need 2 public ips for open vpn , each per UT box? sorry if question is silly as am abit of green newbie

Yes, two external IP addresses are required. This remote box is 2500 miles away.
