    Default Zoneedit + Hostname

    Good Day

I'm trying to make it so my dynamic IP can be accessed like a static ip, firstly for hosting openvpn server and secondly possibly for hosting my own webpage web server (I know buying hosting space is by far the ultimate choice, this will be for my learning experience).

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to configure this.

I think were I'm getting stuck is in the instructions wiki.untangle.com/index.php/Hostname

Why is there space for two Hostnames ?

    First Hostname:

"Untangle has no hostname by default, so you can either set it to a domain name you've set to resolve to Untangle's IP or you can sign up for Dynamic
    DNS"
How do I resolve untangle ip to a domain name ? Using Zoneedit i'm pretty sure I can configure DYN DNS , I have a domain and Zoneedit nameservers directed to it but how ?

    DNS:

"you most likely do not want to enter .com or another publicly resolvable address here, but rather something like .local or .lan"
So if I understand in the DNS box just input (mydomainname).local ?

    Last Hostname:

"Hostname: The hostname you're using for the Untangle".
Is this the internal ip of untangle admin screen? Or is this the domain name ?

Another thing that has me confused is in zone edit control panel :

    Subnet:
I have no Idea what goes here

    Type:
I'm pretty sure I should choose "A" but I have no idea why.

It's hard to grasp the inner mechanics of what is actually going on here and how to apply it to the settings.

So far the only part I understand is unlocking my nameservers from domain.com and switching in Zoneedits nameserver.

I'm pretty sure what I need have happen is the Zoneedit nameserver update the current IP of the untangle server and associate it with the public domain. Also on the untangle side get the untangle server to connect to Zoneedit nameservers to give the changed IP information and to also receive the information of the domain and how they are linked. All the while making sure that this is not done on a root level "@" or .com but instead somehow create a local domain.

I have read the wiki page on hostnames and it explains that a hostname is for a "device" in this case my untangle server and that you can name it whatever you like i.e. untangle.domain. I assume this would be on a local level but i'm not certain.

    Please Help !

    Thank you !

I'm finding that in zoneedit by pointing the ipv4 address to my untangle admin login ip , I can access the admin page by typing subdomain.domain. I now understand the subdomain. If it's just @ or root then it would be .domain . When I try to access this outside of the LAN I find I cannot get to the remote address therefore rendering me stuck still as to how I would get openvpn to point to the untangle server ? I know I'm missing something , I have zone edit pointing to my untangle server correctly I'm pretty sure. I have copied the subdomain details to the first hostname box ie subdomain.domain.co in untangle settings , the domain name suffix is set to domain.co. I also realized that the bottom hostname box might very well be for zoneedits nameservers ie nameserver.com,nameserver.com I believe commas are ok to use with multiple data input as it even says hostname(s). Anyone care to tell me what I'm missing . Please

    Thank you

    Default Zoneedit dynamic ip update

    I do this a lot.
In Zoneedit yes create an A record for www
the @ is for the default
This if your domain is Linux.com
The @ in zoneedit will mean that
    http:/linux.com resolves ok
adding the www A record at zonedit will allow
    http://www.linux.com to resolve there too.

Now in Hostname in in Untangl
mine would be called (1st box)
untangle.linux.com (also created A record @ zoneedit for untangle as well)
Domain suffix would be linux.com (in host setting UT)

Down below I select Zoneedit as my service and enter my username/password there.

    Now domains, I put as follows;
    untangle.linux.com;linux.com;www.linux.com

Now I check - when the IP changes UT automatically updates all 3

    Hope this helps.

    Oh also in Untangle
    Administration
    Public Address Tab
I set to Use Hostname the middle one

    Hope this helps
PS if you are still having a problem - setup zoneedit the way I outlined and get yourself a "windows dynamicdns client" that works with zoneedit.
Then windows can update it with zoneedit in backgroud rather than have UT do it

Fix a computer and it'll break tomorrow.
Teach its owner to fix it and it'll break in some way you've never seen before.
