    Default Ubuntu vs Debian

Ubuntu and Debian are pretty much one in the same right?

VMware server says it supports Ubuntu 8.04, but I am downloading 9.04 Server edition. But I really want to use Debian 5.0. Is there any reason why vmware should not install on debian?

http://it.thelibrarie.com/weblog/?p=270 has a how-to with VMWare Server 2 and Debian 5. I don't know if it works, but it's all that I could find. Good luck?

I would use ESXi but the SATA controller built into the machine is not on the HCL. Plus with the "server" edition I can bind a NIC directly to a VMNIC without the need of a switch.

Normally I would use windows as the base OS but I was thinking once I get it setup it will behave just like any other vmware product controls, because it has a web interface.

what do you mean that you can bind a nic directly to a vmnic without a switch. in esxi i can allocate any one of my nics to be a vmnic, it doesnt have to be configured as default (default is in a failover setup)

    **edit**

personally if you have to do vmware server on anything, i would go with debian, because i feel that ubuntu is still too bloated, even in the server edition.

Ubuntu is a Debian fork... There is a lot of what I would term, familial similarities. Basically you could consider them brothers, there is a strong family resemblance, but when you get into the specifics they are very unique.

Personally I think of Debian as a "server OS" and Ubuntu as a "desktop OS."

What I mean by binding a NIC is I would be able to attach a NIC from the computer to a VMNIC without the need for a vswitch or anything else.
