Do some forum searches on this model and see what you come up with IF you are considering using this with Untangle. Make sure that you aren't looking at ancient posts, as this *was* a problem way back when. Untangle's Linux implementation was updated for v6.0. The only down side I see there is that the disk drives are only 7200rpm. Severe disk activity could cause a bit of delay (I'm thinking about reports). Outside of that, it sounds like a helluva deal!

At this point is when I point out that every box I have in service uses a 7200rpm disk...

Anyway I think the only issue with that unit is the RAID controller.

You don't have any caching slowdowns with 7200rpm at report time or with spam checking?

Nope, I use server grade 7200 rpm drives... 32meg cache. You can't get away with cheap desktop drives. But even those don't slow down much.

Chlor - I have that exact server (except my drives are SCSI, with 15k rpm), but it has worked great for UT, load avg is very small, just hummmmmms right a long. HP's have some good server hardware (but the HP usually stands for "high price"). I still have some DL360 g2's in production.

As far as drive spin rate, I am with Sky-knight I deploy 7200rpm on anything that isnt SCSI, as I have tried the 4200 or 5400 and that causes slowdowns.

We use mostly Proliant servers for our clients..and we have quite a few running Untangle.
Although more DL320 models than 360 models....as IMO you really just need a 1U box for a firewall.
Plenty of posts in the hardware forum about Proliants, I have a few that point to the HP download for Lenny...called "Lenny Deliverables"..which will install system agents that quiet down the fans on the Proliants. Else, depending upon which generation you have, you'll have a screaming box that you won't want in the same room as you.

HP = High Price...well, as with many things, you get what you pay for. They're widely accepted in the enterprise market as solid top notch servers.

4 gigs of RAM, so I wouldn't bite my nails and lose too much sleep about the 7,200rpm hard drives. I have many lesser grade Untangle installs, on early vintage Pentium 4's..with 7,200 PATA and SATA drives, just 1 or 2 gigs of RAM, running networks of 50 - 75 users on 10 and 20 meg internet pipes, heavy Exchange, VPN, no slow down, rock solid.

So think about the needs of the network..how many users, what kind of traffic/loads, how fast in the pipe.
