Oh no I think we agree perfectly. Ubuntu *is* a desktop OS. It runs all the forward beta code just like Fedora does. It's just that Debian is the "CentOS" equivalent of Ubuntu. There is that Ubuntu "server" distro but it just doesn't feel right so I haven't tried it.

If you have CentOS in production, and you're using Fedora to do development for that platform... makes sense to me. I bought books on CentOS, did everything to set myself up to use that as my platform of choice. Heck, I ran asterisk on it for several months. Then I discovered my Debian VMs were more resource efficient for the same tasks and I moved over.

That said, had I discovered the resource issue 6 months later I would have probably stayed with CentOS. My Debian VMs now are far too tweaked into their respective roles to be trivial to replace.

Well, and using Debian in production while doing support for Untangle has other benefits as well. I've learned a lot about the under pinning of Untangle through Debian.

Finally, I'm moving back into the Red Hat camp with OpenFiler. It's based on rpath which is Red Hat derived. It's the only way to get respectable support of RAID controllers. I really wish the hardware guys would get off the Red Hat / SuSE bandwagon... but oh well.

You do know that the iSCSI part of openfiler which I know you use like I do is a simple program called Enterprise iSCSI target server. It should install on debian if you only wanted to run that on a platform you feel more comfortable about.

Yeah I know, but OpenFiler has support. The rpath platform is red hat enough to use red hat drivers. So I have far more options on what to use for the RAID array. Not to mention most RAID venders have web based management ready to go for Red Hat based systems.

So if I want to make an iSCSI server, the base OpenFiler has a lot going for it. OpenFiler on one side + ESXi on the other makes a very compelling platform. Putting Debian VMs within that context is simply magic.

Exactly, I use CentOS in true production and Fedora for my dev work and really to host all my own web sites. That way, when it breaks (and it does rather frequently in comparison) I don't have angry customers yelling at me. Short of a cacti server at work, and I don't even know that I would call that production, I don't think that Fedora should really be used for a true production box.

SUSE, on the other hand, is another beast. One of our servers at work, our main billing system with a dual quad core Xeon and 16GB of RAM has been rock solid and as of last check, has been running for 390+ days, ever since it's been put in. Ever with Fedora, uptime on linux doesn't even come CLOSE to anything you will get with a M$ based operating system.

My firewall box here at home runs Endian, and I just rebooted it the other day and it had been up for some 90 days.

But you matter how you slice it, I'm just more comfortable with the RedHat line of things. I'm sure it's just what I was "raised" on and simply my preference. I'm sure that Debian is rock solid, and I have had many people tell me this, I'm just not comfortable with it as an OS, not like I am with the RedHat lines....

One of these days I will add to the mess on my dresser and throw in a Debian box to play around with. I think I have another semi-good box sitting in the basement....
