I know it's political, but what does everyone think?
Google? Firefox? Wikipedia? Think it will work?

Untangle's official position: http://untangle.com/
Personally I think its already worked. Even co-sponsors are withdrawing support for SOPA and PIPA. I can only imagine the flood of calls people are getting.

Two unrelated concepts
1:Google (and others who charge for their services) cant stop the core of your bussines because SLA. 2:Recent history shows that technology will always be two or more steps ahead of any regulations.

I'll give you that, but the thing is... politicians don't have corporate masters. The electorate has corporate masters.
Those of us on the west coast have it easy, we're allowed to forget the oppression of most unions. If we could get people voting based on logic, instead of fear we'd see some real changes. But for this issue it's moot, this is a long fight for our right to speak our minds. If Sopa passes... these forums go away. Untangle won't be able to risk user content showing and some jack booted thug in the government shutting off the domain name. I am somewhat curious to know if our populace would simply convert to using IP addresses directly to get to things if this monster passed... The adaptive quality of people is amazing to watch. And to Dwasserman, that's only because laws are made in an inherently inflexible way. There are people out there masters of legal constructs that are more flexible and capable of writing law that is self modifying to a degree. Anyway I asked the question because this is the first boycott I've ever seen that's actually been IN MY FACE! I hear about boycotts all the time, this is the first that I've seen actually make an impact... it's all over most sites I work with, my Facebook, everything. Heck I can't even open a copy of Firefox without seeing it.

I guess SOPA/PIPA finally hit a nerve. Relative to these bills the general populace has been silent while the federal government mandates our healthcare, commerce, housing, and freakin' light bulbs! It's interesting to see how much people are willing to put up with. That goes for Google too! There's plenty of hypocrisy to go around here.
The premise of these bills is well-intentioned, but like everything else the government gets involved in it'll end up having the opposite effect, unintended consequences, and sets the path for more overreach. |
