Thanks, of course, only .1% of the people who saw the original post will probably see the response, but it does make one feel better.

Thanks for the upboats!

The discussion is rather... fascinating.

The concept that a business owner isn't allowed to define specifically what is and isn't allowed to be accessed over a network he owns / leases is just flat insane!

He pays the bills, he says what goes. If you want free unfiltered access to the Internet as a whole, get a cell phone with a 3g/4g uplink and browse from there, use your own computer on your own time and go to town!

I can't think of a single place in the US, Australia, Japan, Europe, or most any other "Western" nation where that basic idea of freedom isn't accepted and celebrated.

I just think it's funny when people think they have rights to define how someone else's property should be utilized.

Now if you use aforementioned techniques on your own equipment to get around AUP at work, you're likely OK. If you do this and it affects your job performance because you're wasting all your time checking facebook / reddit... well don't expect to keep your job long!

And Dirk, that was an excellent response. I don't' think it will work, but it was excellent none the less.

Can I request a stupidity category for content filtering. Maybe an ignorant/self righteous one as well. That should just about shut down that sort of nonsense right there.

We face this stuff all the time with Bluecoat proxies. We just manage them, the company they serve makes the policy about allowed categories and websites and the vendor determines the categorisation. We implement a bypass if required based on company policy. No point shooting the IT guy for this arrangement.
