    Default OpenVPN connects but...

    Hi Everyone,

This my first ever post and hope to get some assistance here from the experienced Gurus here whom I hope will guide me in my OpenVPN encounters.

This the first time I'm using Linux based software and it is a good experience for me.

Okay, now for the problem, I really hope I'm not putting a stupid question here. I've configured and install OpenVPN in my office. I'm able to connect with the client software with an IP address 172.16.16.5.

I tried to access the PCs in my office but was unable to...tried to ping, no issues...

So the last obverse choice is to use the IP address of the office PC I want to connect, no issues...I'm able to connect...

One thing I noticed, is when I'm to connect to the office PC using it's IP address, it prompted me for an user ID and password and I have use the Administrator password for the office Domain to get access...

Can I ask you Gurus out there, how can I not have the user ID and password prompt when I access the PCs in my office network and how can I use the hostname of the PCs in my office instead of their IP address?

    cheers!!
Hope someone out there can help me pls...Thanks on Advance

    Hi Bropearl,

Do you use Untangle Firewall as your Openvpn server or a stand alone server?

If you use untangle check if you have exported your dns setting and activated DNS override.

    If standalone check Openvpns forums
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/openvpn/support

Or check if your server.conf have a
    push "dhcp-option DNS 10.66.0.4"
    push "dhcp-option DNS 10.66.0.5"

    Under settings on OpenVPN.
    Go to "Advanced"
    Then Check "Export DNS"
Then go down to "Dns Override" and Enable it.
Now add your DNS ips to the override secrtion.

    (See the screenshot)

Untangle's implementation of OpenVPN uses an IP routed tunnel, so NETBIOS broadcasts do not traverse the tunnel. You will only be able to access your resources by either FQDN or IP... not their NETBIOS name.

As far as prompting for an ID and password, I suspect that's an issue of passing credentials. You would need the AD connector rack running and would probably have to configure a single-sign-on access control, which I don't know that UT or OpenVPN has the ability to do.

    Hi Marvosa,

Thank you for your input, actually, I can now access my office PCs with their host names. funny thing is some of the PCs on the network can't be accessed even with IP address. but I'm glad that the important PCs that need to be accessed is accessible.

I'm thinking abt the AD rack too, I'm going to try the trial version first to see if the logon issue resolves.

Once again, thank you for your input and Webfool's guidance in my VPN adventure. I'm beginning to get the hang of the open VPN, thanks to you guys!!

    Cheers!!
