According to the user, he is running the "AVG internet protection and antivirus suite". When he disabled that he was able to access the network.

so he's running a software firewall that is interfering with the traffic - you can either leave it disabled or reconfigure it to allow the traffic.

Right. I'll see if he can open the UDP port.

    Thanks for all the input!

It isn't the UDP port likely, it's the firewall's distrust of the IP ranges he's connecting to.

I'm willing to bet the firewall isn't blocking the tunnel at all, it's blocking the traffic trying to transit the tunnel.

Will there be a fix or workaround for Windows 7 clients running Open VPN? Meaning, not needing the "run as administrator" trick? I have this issue on my Windows 7 laptop, and if I restart, I forget the open vpn gui launches in the systray WITHOUT administrator access so I am right-clicking to connect to my work network 2-3 times before I remember I need to EXIT the gui, then re-launch with Administrator access. Gets annoying after a while. As I have more and more staff members (those who barely know how to turn on a computer) connecting from home, not all will understand this.

    Thanks.

Sorry, you'll have to talk to Microsoft - they require an application has Administrator permissions to modify the routing table on the box.

I believe you can right-click > properties > Run as Administrator so it does it automatically, but I'm not a big windows guy so don't quote me on that.

Here is the Windows 7 property window to set "run as administrator".

The only "workaround" currently available is to use the OpenVPN service. Because the service operates under a different account, it can be admin while the user is not. However, the service cannot be controlled via the GUI software, and only really works for desktops that are always plugged in.
