Default Connecting to PC on network is dropping?

Hello,

Has anyone else had problems with connecting through Remote PC and having your VNC connection constantly dropping?

I've enable the 14 day free trial of Remote PC and was using it on my internal network last night from a wireless laptop to connect to my Ubuntu Desktop downstairs. I didn't think much of it until I tried it again today from a PC outside my network. This PC I used today is not wireless and it's on a T1 line so it should be very fast. I've used Hamachi with VNC extensively to connect to all my PC's at home from various locations and have never run into problems like this before.

Is the 14 day free trial limited to only connecting for a few seconds before it drops, or is this a glitch in the software?

I'm testing this feature out for possible use in my father's network at his business so I can more easily connect to any PC and help him if he needs it.

Charles.

hmm.. happens from any client machine? wireless or wired?

it might help if you try directly on the local network via a wire to see. (reduces the chance of any TCP resets)

Hello,

I've tried this now from within my network where all PC's are hooked up via network cable. Once again my connection is alive for only a few seconds and then it drops. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but it doesn't look all that hard to setup so I don't think I've set something up incorrectly.

Is there another way to connect to my PC's through Untangle? Maybe using ssh and vnc?

Thanks.

Are you destined for Windows boxes? Remote desktop is simply better...

Thanks for the help everyone. We've decided to buy the PC remote option after I spoke to an Untangle rep who assured me that it does indeed work...but it takes a bit to setup first. Seems the problem I was having is with Java. It's painful to fix in that it takes a bit of time to remove every install of Java JRE and then upgrade each version one at a time.

This is for Windows XP only (I haven't tired this on any other OS). I do have an Ubuntu box, but I'm not sure if I need to complete all these steps to have it work on Ubuntu. I will be updating Java on my Ubuntu eventually and will post back here with the results. Here are the steps I followed based upon Untangle Tech Support help:
  • Uninstall each version of the Java Runtime engine starting with the most recent first and working backwards to the oldest version.
  • After each uninstall, you must reboot your PC.
  • Once all installs have been removed, go to this page: http://java.sun.com/products/archive/
  • Download the JRE 5.0 updates 7 to 14.
  • Download also the JRE 6.0, both the base and Update 1.
  • Install each version starting with oldest (5.0 update 7) to newest (6.0 Update 1).

This has worked for me on two of my XP computers. I'm not getting the dropped connections anymore. On a third Windows XP PC, this hasn't worked and still gives me problems...I'll rety these steps again on this third PC to see if I can fix the issue.

Hopefully this will help someone else who might have this problem.

Charles.
