Default Managing Policy at User Level without Directory Connector

    Hello,

I am pretty new to this and have read several threads, but cannot come across an answer.

Problem: Want to control browsing at a user level.

Situation: Have a shared XP Pro computer at home that the wife and kids use. Each user logs into to Windows with their own account and subaequently to the web through UT captive portal. I have no Windows Server set up, just the XP box, the UT box, and a few iPads / notebooks that work fine through UT wirelessly.

I purchased Policy Manager, but from what I am understanding, you need to assign static IPs to each machine and assign various virtual racks in order for Policy Manager to work. That's fine at a machine level, but what if I have a shared machine? I have set up user authentication in capitve portal with the local directory option.

Must I purchase Directory Connector and set up an instance of AD to accomplish my goal? I would have imagined there would be some way to harness the local XP login credentials or those in the captive portal.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you'll need Directory Connector to match usernames to IPs regardless of whether you're using AD, Radius or Local Directory - just add in the trial of Directory Connector and set it to use Local Directory, you should see your Captive Portal logins in the Username Map. once that is done you can set up policies using your Local Directory users, the only caveat is they won't show up as selectable in the list like AD/Radius users will, you'll need to manually type in the usernames.
