lol, my thoughts exactly. RAP was a great idea, and in the beginning it worked, but it did not have long term viability. I guess that is the problem with open source projects. We rely heavily on other peoples hard work that they are unpaid for. I dont care how dedicated someone is to something, if it becomes more of a job than a hobby and there is no $$$ to keep you motivated, eventually you will give up and walk away. If UT is going to use open source projects as paid modules, then they should be ready to fork the project and keep it alive if the original dev team calls it a day.

Yeah, but isn't the whole concept of UT to take FOSS apps and glue them together into a coherent management platform?

UT's core competency is being the gravy that pulls the meal together - not being the meat, or the potatoes.

I don't want them to waste dev resources in situations where their reach exceeds their grasp.

Or at very least provide a workable alternative. Granted this is a subscription based product... so things can come and go. But the "EOL" is at the end of the customer's sub... not a magical version number.

This move has been communicated to all untangle partners some time ago.

EOL means we no longer sell new subscriptions. It is still supported by our support staff.
However, please realize that they cannot fix java webstart bugs in the newer versions of java - only Sun can do that and they won't be doing it. We know this makes the product unusable by many people, but thats why it isn't being sold because we can't provide a user experience that is up to the Untangle standard.

This is too bad. I've been testing out Untangle to replace our Sonicwall Pro, Sonicwall SSL-VPN, Websense and some other spam software we have running on our system. Everything's been going great so far except for RAP. Without some sort of remote portal we don't really have the option to continue with Untangle. I paid for a month for certain apps to try them out for a longer period of time than the trial provided and was planning on purchasing a year's license if all went well.

I sure hope something else comes along to replace this failed portal otherwise the decision of whether or not to stick with Untangle will have been made for me.

RJonesUSC,

Sorry to hear that. Assuming you are on 7.1 RAP will still be available to you in 7.2 and future versions. However, It will just not be advertised for sale to new users.

It really is too bad. I'm really liking UT so far and can see it as a viable replacement for the aforementioned products.

It's been mentioned elsewhere that there may be a replacement for RAP in development. Is there any truth to that? If so, I could probably get by with using OpenVPN on the laptops in the meantime.
