Default how to get around the public dns "issue"

Spamhaus and other rbl's have decided to not accept queries from public dns servers. There's a way around this if you have UT as one server and another server handling network dns. You point UT's dns to your isp dns. That way the spamblocker works correctly. You then have your network server(AD, or some other SSO system) use opendns or whatever public dns you wish. This allows you to have the spamblocker work correctly AND you can use opendns(as another layer of security or just for dns performance) of google or whatever public dns you want to.

because they charge large businesses who use the service to use the service lol. If you send more than 250,000 queries a day you get blacklisted until you pay them for the service. Hence public dns servers quickly get blacklisted.

Darn that evil commercialism... that burning desire to actually be able to feed your own kids... breaking down our insatiable desire to have everything handed to us for free!

i just don't like the idea of a single company being able to decide if your a spammer or not based on if your willing to pay them or not.

i guess 250k a day is more than the average user but for OpenDNS with i think more and more people using it OpenDNS will have to start paying off spamh and charge for their now free service.

Matiau: Then don't use spamhaus. they are a provate company and can do what they wish. There's plenty more rbl's out there like the barracuda brbl(barbel as it's known) among others.

BTW if you don't like a company telling you how to use something based in price then you won't like apple, Microsoft, oracle..i can go on and on. You have a choice to not use them..but folks feel they either have to(not true) or they want the warm fuzzy of large corp standing behind their product)only partially true).. The only way to have total free choice in software is go with free software..

I know i have a choice, and i know they can do what they want, which like most companies these days it is all about the bottom line, screw the customers, i thought SpamH was the one many many companies used, the top dog so to speak so what they are doing is going to screw over alot of legit people.

I guess we just need to hope that these companies choose to go with other rbl's and show SpamH there are options.

    What options?

You're confused in definition. You aren't a customer until you paid for something.

So SpamHaus isn't letting you run your network on their demo AND have OpenDNS filtration too? boo hoo?

Untangle Premium Subscription = no more need for OpenDNS. There's the real solution.

Incidentally, OpenDNS themselves have a rather strict NON-COMMERCIAL license on their free stuff. Have you gotten a paid sub from them?

Never forget, the primary objective of any organization is to ensure its own survival. All other directives are secondary. And anyone that says they are above such things is lying.
