    Default Evaluating untangle

Could I get some unbiased opinions on untangles anti-spam effectiveness?

I currently run symantec mail security for exchange, it's an ok product, I find that it's not good enough IMHO and would wish for better blocking. This would be a huge selling point for untangle at my company if we could dumb symantec's yearly costs and put that toward untangle.

I have tried the lite version and it was ok, but I had it running along with symantecs product so it was difficult to judge any effectiveness. I'm little hesitant to shut off symantec and put the 14 day trial of full version on untangle, I may in the end do this, but my company is privately owned and lets just say the ownership and higher ups may or may not have short fuses

(I realize I'm asking for unbiased opinion ON untangle's forum, but it can't hurt to get some info )

I switched from GFI MailEssentials a couple years ago to the paid version of Untangle. In my experience Untangle has been way better than GFI was. That was about 4 years ago, not sure if GFI has improved since then.

We had a spam problem here and it was...bad. Really bad. People were getting sometimes hundreds of spam emails per day. (That were going right through another UTM device that was set up improperly). I set Untangle up simply for catching spam to see how it went. It's simply amazing. It's cut out the spam so well, that now I get phone calls/emails like: "This email came to my inbox yesterday. Is it spam?"

What's impressed me the most, is the user-controlled and accessible quarantine and the ability to turn up or down the threshold.

Because it's based on the crowd-sourced SpamAssassin project, there are sometimes delays of a week or so in it catching new versions of spam. I just let users know that if they're getting a message every day, it should stop in less than a week. Haven't had any issues there at all.

At this point, we're not using any other spam filtering solution other than Exchange not accepting emails for people not in our GAL. YMMV, but it's been amazing for us, and I highly recommend it.

I found the paid version of the Spam Blocker to be very effective. We have a number of users that I swear have put their email address on the 'Please send me spam' list and it did such a good job that I moved away from GFI's spam solution.

I am by no means unbiased, but I will say that in our office, if we get spam, we know that someone has restarted the Untangle.

You could try asking in the Untangle forum over at Spiceworks. http://community.spiceworks.com/group/show/243-untangle
