Finally an improved IPS. But why Snort and not Suricata if I may ask?

So this brings up a very interesting question. The fact that you are addressing IPS in this release. Does this mean that you are changing your previously stated disposition that IPS really is overrated in most products, because it is generally under-managed, and therefore not very effective (not to mention problems created by false-positives, etc.)?

You had to have a reason for making a change here with IPS. I'd be very curious as to the reasoning.

This is interesting timing, as I have a new car dealership that uses UT NG, and just last Thursday afternoon we had a security/compliance meeting in which it was discussed that IPS is requested by multiple vendors (the auto manufacturers, and some other vendors who provide integral services with their auto-industry sales process). I told them that UT NG has IPS, but also knowing in the back of my mind that your previous disposition has pretty much caused us to believe it is not as nearly as effective as people would like to believe.

Your thoughts & input are much appreciated in this area (in regards to the new IPS in 11.1).

    Thanks!

Well, I will use logic to answer this.... because selling a high end security product that the IDS is basically worthless, is not a high end security appliance and will get discounted by anyone who wants to buy a high end security appliance. Heck, I am a home user and I went to Sophos UTM because Untangle had no IDS and country blocking. But what do I know, I am a home user.

The place where I work discounted Untangle and went with Fortinet, one reason being there was no viable working IDS in Untangle. They lost the sale. And at the time they had a crappy paid AV. Not that Fortinet gateway AV is any better, but having Bitdefender or Kaspesky would of added a + and not a - that Commtouch/Cyren did at the time. It is nice to see Untangle getting a top end AV option to pick off low hanging fruit.
