Default new pdf emailed reports (feedback please)

Some users have said that they miss things that were originally included in the 6.2 version of pdf reports.

We're looking at improving the new pdf reports so that we can make them far greater than the current or old pdf reports. In order to do so, I'd like to make sure we accurately document what use cases where supported in the original pdfs and are not in the new (7.0) pdfs.

    Currently I have:
    1) Inability to attach/include truncated incident logs
    2) many top-15 lists in previous are now top-10 lists
    3) Inability to see each user's top domain list
    4) Inability to see each user's MB usage.
    5) True daily report not available
    6) Ability to receive *only* monthly or weekly.

Please be *very explicit* about what information was in the old one and not in the new one. I'm looking into collecting feedback and folding into 7.2 which is currently being defined. This is your chance to contribute feedback.

Default The old vs the new

Let me preface by saying I'm no power user. We have a relatively small network. The only apps installed on the UT Server are Web Filter and Protocol Control. We do, however, have a big need to monitor traffic over our network.

The old reports took all the information that was being logged and spit it out to me in a pdf format on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. I would scroll through it or use the bookmarks on the Web Filter User Summary page to link directly to suspect clients to see what was going on. My daily reports ran around 200-300 pages and my monthly reports ran around 1300 pages. All of it accessible by clicking the bookmarks on the summary pages.

There was no need to log on, drill down, export, format, bring into Crystal (if you have it) or anything else. The reporting capability was built into UT Server. Now the reporting aspect has been shifted to the end user. All we get now is raw data and some nice pie charts.

    Specifically:
    1. The pages that list all domains accessed by each user individually, sorted descending by number of hits/domain (see attachment).
    2. An "Activity - Summary" that lists total activity in MB per client, sorted descending by MB transferred (see attachment).

As I go on, I realize that it's probably futile to go through this, as I'd just end up saying that what is missing is the old reports in their entirety. Maybe the UT team doesn't use the reports in the same way that A LOT of the users do, as is evidenced by the number of threads and posts asking "where's this now" and "where's that now" and "how do I revert to the old version."

Essentially, finally providing easy access to all the raw data but taking out the means to view it in a meaningful way is not considered an upgrade to those who used the old reports in all their many MB glory. I'd be more than happy to email you one of my old reports and have you tell me how may additional clicks and how many additional pieces of software it would take to make it look now like it did in the old version, or something similar, for management to read.

You guys make a great product, both the free and paid versions, but this change in the reports truly seems to be an odd decision, and many of your users are obviously baffled, both by the reasoning and the choices made.

Sorry to take up all this space, but I felt the need to lay it out there.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I would appreciate it if you could email me one of your large reports (1000+ pages) at dmorris@untangle.com

I realize you think this is a large step backwards, but realize our focus is on online reporting. If you don't want to use the online reporting tool then I can understand your frustration.

    Default web reports no good

I am trying to deal with not having detailed pdf reports, but I can't even get the web reports to give me data correctly. They are stuck on one day as shown in the screenshot. Thanks

That would be because untangle only lists the first 1000 event's of the week.(as all reports show 7 days of data)

The only way for you to get beyond that is to download the CSV file.
As I also had the same problem as you.

you can download the CSV file by click the spreadsheet icon above the "Time tab".
Wasn't very obvious to me :-)

    Dirk:

    Please help us
We use the pdf report for 2 important reason
a-Generate monthly report to the manager (cut and past to generate summary)
b-forensic task, when an virus incident is detected in a workstation, we look in depth in the daily report of web filter, to find and block the malware url.
All of this via the send mail function

The pdf report concept in vertion 6.2 (an older) is the biggest difference and advantage over other products (ipcop, endian, fortinet, etc, Yes I chose untangle in my seek)

I apologize for my poor english.

So everyday it attaches to the end of the xls? I have to look thru a weeks worth of data to find today's as it doesn't have dates in the spreedsheet?
If I set it to only 1 days data retention, will that only give me that day's?
I am really confused about this new reporting and I am considering going back to 6.2 which means no more updating and that kinda sucks...
Right now the reporting feature is a bit useless to me web and csv. I hate to be a whinner, but to me catching a porn site that went thru is better than knowing my bandwith...
    Thanks

    Hi brent,
I do belive that the Untangle dev team likes feedback but this thread headline is "new pdf emailed reports (feedback please)"
I feel that there are other threads where your feedback could have gone in to..

But than again i might just be grumpy.

    As for
If I set it to only 1 days data retention, will that only give me that day's?
if you select one day you will see that the text under it changes so that it includes one weeks worth of data.

Correction there is a date and time in the spreadsheet.

The first field is the date/time, in row A.
It is not formatted correctly. So if you click on the row, then right click and select format, then go to custom, then select the option dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm.

Click ok and you should have the date and time in that field.
If you want to go on. You can even filter the data in the spread sheet to only show you the date you want. EG. show web result for between the 06/10/2009 - 08/10/2009 and so on.

Use a we bit of excel knowledge and you will have everything you need in that spreadsheet you just downloaded.

    Edit: I'm using excel 2007

That's because the data and time are stored in UNIX format. It's the number of seconds from some wacky date in the 60s if you must know why it looks like an integer.

(Yes I know the history behind it, I just think the method is moronic)

In any event... the "daily" report should be FREAKING DAILY! Imagine that... LOGIC!

I'm so utterly floored by this release I don't even know where to start.
