I just ran into the "te" issue as well, but in reverse. xtuple is so heavy in manufacturing accounting and most if not all my clients are in service fields, lawyers, doctors, trucking... Took me awhile to find the "te" module, then realized that it is included with the installation package I used. (as you stated earlier, but I guess I missed)...
Yeah, they need to point out the modules in a more obvious fashion.
