    Thanks for all these ideas. Do you think that Untangle would automatically program it so that it would boot the most recent kernel for future updates so we don't have to do these steps? I'm thinking that would be really important, especially if the kernel update fixes a security issue with the kernel.

    why not simply leave it at "default 0". That would ensure the newest kernel always loaded. Most of my boxes are remote and headless and this not starting proved to be a hassle.

    Well after it boots the new kernel it will "default save" the boot nr.
    So it will use it as default.
    In that sence if untangle updates again and add info to the menu.list yours will be in a original state.

    But yes leaving it at 0 will work.
