Double post, but an odd update. I have an i3 based platform I'm testing and it wouldn't work in IDE emulation mode, but does work in AHCI... which is to say... weird.

i had same issue with a asus workstation board with 1156 socket . only sata set to ahci worked
My experience shows that Optiplex Series 3XX are not totally comaptible with Linux. Sometimes I had issues with CD Drive, sometimes had issues with Video Card.
On the other hand never had issues with Series 6xx or even 7xx.
About Poweredge 19xx or 29xx no issues.
Not necessary to say (here), but consult Dell for Linux Compatibility would be helpful
the optiplex 3x and newer linesare too new for most Linux distros. The only distros Dell supports is RHEL and ubuntu.
