    Default will this work?

I am looking at max 50 users, i was looking at building a box with a jetway J7F4K1G5D-PB(1.5ghz)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813153062

i will throw in 1gb of ram and an 80gb sata hard drive. Will this be sufficient to run 1-50 users?

please note, i will not be using spam filtering at all.

also, will rpm of the 2.5" hard drive make a difference that much?? 5400/7200?

MiniPilote is running a similar setup.

50 users is probably a bit much for that setup though.

1GB of ram should be fine, but if you switch to an intel processor like this one:

    http://www.intel.com/products/mother...GLY2/index.htm

It is probably 3 times as fast as the VIA chip.

Also in my experience 2.5" drives fail much more often than 3.5" drives in server/always on environments, and Untangle reporting does actually use the hard disk a decent bit.

Oh and on the intel link definitely get the one with the fan.

Also for 50 users dual core may be important I am not sure.

what im trying to get at is to make something small for those clients that have no room for a full tower. The larger clients ones closer to 50 mostly only use this to have a number of there users web blocked to a whitelist only. Basically I am saying is that with the users with 50 workstations behind this, probably only 5 users can browse the web and the rest have a whitelist only of about 10 websites.....so not a lot of traffic. My clients that are going to have all users browsing internet freely will only have around 10 max at a time.

    does this make sense??

The reason i was trying to go with 2.5" drive was so i could fit it in a small case and make it wall mountable/small.

also, the intel board you showed me will not work as if i'm aiming for small, there is no room for pci card/riser card for a second nic.
if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

I see if it is just web traffic that definitely does help lower the requirements on hardware.

I personally haven't done much hardware benchmarking. So all I can say is if you try it please let us know how it goes.

That is my board of choice, I've got 4 of them out now. Works just fine. You will not have an issue with 50 users. People tend to go overkill.

That motherboard has two onboard gigabit NIC's BTW. No need for a riser or another PCI nic. Take it out of the jetway box, install it in the case, and install untangle. Done. Very simple. I actually imaged the install, I can get these up and running within a few mins.

    I reccomend this case:

You can visit any vinyl shop and have a nice logo made for the top and paint is some bright color.

    Big warning about laptop drives!

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ort/+bug/59695

This is all linux based OS's. The "fix" is to disable power management, which can make the drives run hot. However, if you have a lot of continuous load, the drive should be on all the time anyway.

Agreed...I have an older 2.4 GHz w 1/gig RAM running a network of 75...on a pipe that bursts to 20 megs...and it runs great. e-mail server behind it, 25 VPN users going across it via JuniperSSL, watching console stats..that CPU hardly gets above 10%.
